❗️UNESCO adds Lebanese & West Bank sites to World Heritage in Danger list

UNESCO has placed several historic sites in Lebanon and the occupied West Bank on its list of World Heritage Sites in Danger, citing damage and threats linked to Israel.
Among the sites added is Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, a Crusader-era fortress besieged by Israeli occupation forces during their invasion in Lebanon. The castle is one of five historic fortresses in the Jabal Amel region included in the listing, with UNESCO warning that the sites had suffered damage and faced continued risks “serious enough to justify resorting to an emergency procedure.”
Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salame welcomed the decision, calling it “a remarkable achievement in the effort to protect these important Lebanese historical landmarks.” He said only some of the sites remained under Lebanese control and accused Israel of damaging Shamaa Castle and threatening Beaufort.
UNESCO also listed Sebastia, an archaeological site near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, as endangered. The site is believed to be the location of the ancient city of Samaria and has become the focus of Israeli preservation and development plans, including a land expropriation project.
UNESCO warned that the site’s integrity was threatened by plans to establish the “Samaria” (Shomron) National Park. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized the decision, accusing Palestinians of seeking to erase the supposed Jewish connection to the area.
