I honestly find it odd that anyone brings up "no choices" and "lack of customisation" as a point against GNOME at all... Nothing in any desktop environment comes close to the versatility of GNOME extensions.

    finally someone says it.

    the extensions might not be core utilities of gnome and break on an update, but they allow for customization that even kde doesn't provide yet everyone is saying gnome has a "lack of customization"

    Yes, KDE included. I don't think you understand the level of flexibility that being able to monkey-patch the GNOME shell provides. And I say that as someone who loves both KDE and GNOME for different reasons.

    Honestly, I personally feel sorry (with every intention to offend) that you and others like you settle for and defend tooth and nail a half-baked solution, glued together with saliva and that breaks every time a core GNOME developer decides on it like monkey-patching over a shitty API. Not to mention the fact that KDE also allows it, and I say this as a KDE user, for the deepest part of its extensibility and scriptability, but without breaking it just because it looked ugly, and also allows other types of extensions, such as compiled dynamic libraries, or Plasmoids and components.

    I mean, you can say anything you want. Just doesn't change reality. GNOME devs do a lot these days to prevent updates from breaking extensions.

    KDE also simply doesn't allow everything GNOME allows. I love KDE and I have past contributions to KDE as well. But pretending they're on the same level of customizability is delusional. It's not a helpful or meaningful statement to make, a statement born out of pure ignorance. Plus, you dragged KDE into this, not me. Not everything needs to be a fking desktop war for no fking reason.

    I'm not making this a desktop war... Just mentioned it because everybody was saying something FALSE, because what you say about GNOME and KDE it's not true. I'm not ignorant, I have years in Linux too, and the fact that you make that ad hominem attack says really much about you. I'll cut it here because I don't have time nor energy to follow up, just wanna say everyone here that GNOME isn't that good.

    Except we weren't talking or asking about how much better KDE is for you. I genuinely don't care since I already love both desktops. Unlike you, I'm not here to shit on one or the other.

    We were discussing the flexibility offered by GNOME's extensions, which you, with your limited understanding, declared to be something that KDE can match, when that's just plain untrue just by virtue of how extensions work. You also implied that GNOME core devs are careless about extensions, which they are not. It's just how GNOME extensions work. It's a tradeoff for the flexibility, one they've tried their best for years to mitigate including offering porting guides. You can take offense to being told you're ignorant about all of this. But once again, that doesn't change how reality works.

    That all said, I agree that I don't have the time or energy for this either. But as a software engineer, I really wish people wouldn't bring in their "opinions" when facts about a piece of software are being discussed... Anyway, i won't be replying here anymore, so bye
