Iran has successfully developed and unveiled an indigenous technological platform dedicated to the design, genetic engineering, production, and purification of oncolytic, cancer-killing viruses, as reported by Press TV.
The breakthrough was showcased on Sunday during a ceremony marking the 46th anniversary of the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR), attended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi.
Developed by the Advanced Cancer Therapy Technology Development Research Group under the leadership of Ramin Saramifaroushani, the platform is engineered to selectively target and destroy malignant cells while sparing healthy tissue.
According to Press TV, the initiative has successfully advanced past laboratory and preclinical stages, allowing the country's first domestically engineered oncolytic virus to officially enter initial clinical trials for treating resistant cancers.
Health Minister Zafarghandi lauded ACECR for bridging scientific research with national healthcare needs. Officials emphasize that the new biomedical infrastructure will significantly reduce reliance on foreign technology while expanding national capabilities in next-generation gene therapies, advanced therapeutic medicinal products, and commercialized medical biotechnology.
