background info (and a bit of an apology): im pretty sure that a comrade on here also confessed to this and i shunned them for it. this was because of my own shame and internalized moral panic. now that i am being more open about it i no longer feel the urge to shame others. i would like to apologize to this comrade and if you recognize yourself in my message please feel free to dm me if thats what u want.

some of our comrades subscribe to an openly genAI position and believe that friend AI chatbots will actually cure loneliness and social isolation. i oppose this belief and i want this thread to be a discussion about the bad effects of using this technology especially as a child. if you are pro genAI this might not be for you.

My own experience wasn't super, lol. But it was posh compared to most kids not in the west.

13? Interestingly, we're twinning, there.

Yup. At 13 I was working summers and school-breaks traveling with a state circuit for circus tours. Ended up taking absences constantly until I almost failed two years straight till I was 15. I was very lucky to have the counselor I have to advocate for me, otherwise I would have dropped out in middle-school.

Towards end of freshman year I was working at a breakfast-dinner family restaurant as a line-cook nearly full-time. Eventually transferred to facilities maintenance work while going to trade-school while in high-school junior-senior. Worked at a church built in the 1800s starting off as a tile-cutter for asbestos tile replacement for historic building of the church and daycare center that was converted parish-housing. Not that any of it mattered anyways because it was all minimum wage.

My life has always been poverty. I have the ability to fix your main-line of your toilet, your toilet itself, I can caulk, fit bath-tubs, windows and other various housing "accessories" and I can also work with low voltage electrical cert-wise, HVAC, asbestos, landscaping, roofing and almost every trade you can think of besides for ironworking and boiler-making. I don't like to reveal much about myself but I'm not even 30.

🙂 We twin in other areas, as well. But I've never messed with asbestos and I don't aim to do. I also know diddly about HVAC, beyond ductwork and the trip switch on the outside unit.

Just so tiring. All of these skills for dog-shit pay. At this point I've become a walking stereotype of what "boomers tell you what you should do" so when people start talking inevitably about it I can just point out that I've taken every step of learning skills, hopping careers to build more skills, went to trade school, fully certified myself and even have my own side-gig and they really have no response after I drop all that on them. Just think I'm some absurd outlier when half of this country lives paycheck to paycheck because they're so fucking insulated and privileged. Exhausting.
