What about whatever they were called before the people that called them that killed the guys that called it whatever it was called before?

    Exactly. Not to mention that all names are equally arbitrary (except for onomatopoeia, arguably, but I don't think that's relevant here), so none are more "real" (whatever that means) than any other.
