Report sure, but the non-zero chance for downvoting spam resulting in an unseen ban somewhere (scripts, vote ratio) has trained me not to do that one.

    I don't disagree when it comes to comms, but with instance bans there can be no interactions even on 3rd party places and you can't even block users of that instance effectively (on Lemmy at least, which also has no other indication) Which means you must keep a mental note that a thread or user would be a waste of time replying to.

    I mean if the instance is small enough that won't that much of an issue, but still.

    EDIT: And as I hinted at in my original comment, that modlog actions may not federate over (I assume because different fedi architecture) can make it basically a shadow-ban.

    Really? I've never been instance banned, that I know of anyway, so that intrigues me: why does it make it more difficult to properly block users from that instance?

    Indeed being shadow-banned sucks - it's so unfriendly:-(.

    Because on Lemmy at least, blocking (beyond individual users) generally isn't that effective. Doing so wouldn't hide users of a blocked instance if they posted in this community for example. Even community blocking is a bit weird... I often see image posts from a blocked comm because the image itself isn't hosted on that comm, though none of the comments will be visible (luckily in that case it actually isn't a big issue).

    Ah I see what you mean - individually is still fine but en mass yeah Lemmy's "instance block" is named so poorly as to effectively represent disinformation since it does nothing of the kind, instead only muting communities located on that instance but not at all blocking any of the users. PieFed can do it, of course, but Lemmy has gotten left far behind in terms of features. And continues to move forward at a glacially slow pace, it seems to me.
