But first they should move away from Microslop (most of the Government of Canada uses 365 or whatever). I was running MX checks on a bunch of agencies and seeing every agency using Microsoft for email. Before you say how hard it is to host your own email now a days one agency uses easydns, a Canadian host, the same one I use.

    The government uses Microsoft Surface tablets running Microsoft Windows. They send Microsoft Word documents to each other in Microsoft Outlook through a Microsoft Exchange server, which then gets uploaded to Microsoft OneDrive to be shared with their department on Microsoft SharePoint. Then message each other over Microsoft Teams.

    Microsoft owns the Canadian government.

    Not so sure... AFAIK, the government's email works, right now... Wouldn't want another Phoenix-style fiasco right now.

    I get why it should be done, I just don't trust the way government IT projects are run these days.

    It really isn't that hard, especially if you're going to pay someone a full-time salary to do it. I have self-hosted my whole email stack for like 20 years and nobody pays me shit. Granted it's aggravating, thankless, and relentlessly under attack. It can't be done with a typical home connection, and the process of properly configuring and securing it can mean dodging several large foot-guns (and some smaller, sneakier ones), but they're well-known and well-documented and there are even testers for almost all of them. I don't really recommend hosting your own mail server. It often feels like it's not really worth it (it probably isn't) but it's isn't hard per-se, particularly not for a corporation or institution, it's just rather obnoxious.

    I wanna say it was in 2020 that I decided to pull the plug and move my domain to a .ca address, I made the mistake of using hosthero as my host. I wanted to stop paying apple for their hide my email feature when the boycott the US thing started so I went to hosthero and saw what they could do for me, it was going to be considerably more expensive but I would get to make up my own scheme for emails. As I dropped US services and looked for replacements, I fell into the hobby of self hosting. I had myself a plan it was going to take me 3 months to do everything I wanted to do. I was going to be flexible and give myself 2 weeks if the one weekend was not going to be enough to setup my mail server once I got my static IPs, more than enough time I thought. I was having so much troubles getting my smtp working I had got the MX records all figured out and port 25 opened on one of my IP addresses, after I realized I was just going to pull my hair out if I was going to do it I looked into the email hosting at easyDNS as I had dropped hosthero because I could easily self host my simple blog already and I did not need to be paying HostHero so much, easyDNS offers a wild card option for email so I do not need to spend actual time creating a new email address.
