I can believe they are stupid enough to try, but I'm also not sure if they are actually this stupid right now or if there is something more to it and they'd like us to think they're that stupid. Trump seems to care a lot about electoral bullshit, so maybe he wants to plant a flag and declare victory or something. I dunno. There's not a lot I'd put past the empire at this point, but I'm also wary of assuming stupidity where something more thought out might be involved.
