I kind of assumed that protests are just a source of intel for all kinds of agencies, not just ICE.

I got paranoid in some protests I've been to. We are heavily surveiled. I think that just rallying is not effective either, I think we need to protest in more effective ways.

I assume they are getting footage, focusing on things like faces and car license plates, since at least the WTO protests. Amped up during Occupy. Also, I just assume the use of things like Stingrays to get every phone in the area. Don't really need to run video through face recognition if you can identify device(s) being carried by people that show up.

And that's not even getting into sending in agent provocateurs to make things violent to discredit an entire movement.

I'm sure if I dug through the Church Committee hearing findings on things like COINTELPRO would turn up more.

I'm cynical AF, too, and don't believe for one fucking second that COINTELPRO ever really stopped. Only the code names and technology, most likely. Hell, W's people were apparently infiltrating Quaker meetings and vegan potlucks after 9/11. It'd be nice if they were to focus their efforts on the people most likely to carry out domestic terrorism instead of vegans and Quakers - but it's likely the Republican base that end up being the suspects.
