Ah , so chock full of surveillance malware.
Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
And it might blow up.
That can't be ruled out...
googles Palestine ... 📳💥
That shit was straight out of a fucking movie. I still can't believe it actually happened in real life, I was horrified more than usual.
SurvAillance
So, just an android fork?
"As if openclaw and android had a baby", and that's a recommendation, not a warning? WTF.
Probably bad stuff.
This appears related to Quo, since the JSON schemas point there.
They use a broker, a MITM for AI requests, which filters out sensitive data before it goes to OpenAI, but not before it's at their server.
You can see the URL Android calls here: https://github.com/secondly-com/OpenPhone/blob/83e31fd6ec9da94ba299465fc28ad7c6aa677326/overlay/packages/apps/OpenPhoneAssistant/src/org/openphone/assistant/state/AssistantViewModel.kt#L175
The MITM Python server here: https://github.com/secondly-com/OpenPhone/blob/83e31fd6ec9da94ba299465fc28ad7c6aa677326/services/model-broker/openphone_model_broker.py
The tests of the middleman: https://github.com/secondly-com/OpenPhone/blob/83e31fd6ec9da94ba299465fc28ad7c6aa677326/scripts/smoke-test-model-broker.sh
And the nginx proxy and full deployment, in case you want to do some self-spying: https://github.com/secondly-com/OpenPhone/tree/83e31fd6ec9da94ba299465fc28ad7c6aa677326/services/model-broker/deploy
Edit: Keep in mind this is the public facing version. OTA updates are prebuilt from who knows where, and the broker may have more code than is in the public Python file.
Zios loves contributing to open source.
That are one (and perhaps only) good thing about the ig
Only good zio is a dead zio.
"Open phone" is an oxymoron
Less is more, even if it wasn't spying on you no one really needs the "integrated AI" bloatware.
I remember when I bought the moto x4 and it supported on device processing, Android Auto with maps fully downloaded, played the music I asked, worked entirely without Internet but if I had service I could ask anything in the world, somehow 10 years later we have the garbage we have.
I bet it autocorrects every other word to “antisemitism”. Then has you arrested after submitting your texts to IDF.
Even if he didn't have that background, I don't really understand why someone would need something like this
Most of the examples shown can be done with automate or tasker without any ai
Wasting billions of tokens just to check "is it morning yet?" 🤷🏻♂️
oh look, If you see the apps on that screen in the photo, it lists every company you should be avoiding. how neat.
Let's all download this shit and constantly discuss planned assassinations we heard about that aren't actually happening. Then create fictional revolutionaries who hate Israel so the AI is poisoned and all the agents go on wild goose chases looking for them.
Please don't do this in the USA. Crime is no longer a requisite for punishment.
If anyone wants to look further:
This is hilariously absurd to me
OpenPhone is an AI-native Android OS that turns the phone into an agentic device: a system-level AI agent that can see the screen, operate apps, remember commitments, monitor phone events, and continue work in the background
Usually people install custom ROMs specifically to avoid surveillance and random crap running in the background and improve performance, but this is the complete opposite.
I can't imagine why you would want any of that. There's nothing in my life or nearby imagined lives that's so arduous I need an AI "agent" to take care of it.
This supports the hypothesis that it's driven by out of touch rich people who are used to having an executive assistant. They can't imagine doing daily tasks because they don't. "Making a dinner reservation? Myself?? How gauche. Get Amanda to do it."
They then think everyone is like them.
I don't think it's that they're out of touch. I think they really want your data. Imagine AI sending a screenshot of your screen every second back to whoever made it and whoever can be bothered to listen in. I think everything else, like the marketing and hype around it, is consensus building.
I'm sure they want the data for money and other nefarious purposes. But as the other person said, I think the way they try to sell people on it reveals they're out of touch. And maybe a little that AI's offerings aren't actually that good.
But a commercial that's like "it can write a birthday note for your daughter!" is a bleak reflection of someone's world. That's not going to resonate with most people. That's the kind of thing a soulless husk with no real bond with their child would think is good.
Yea, that's a good point. I guess in my head since I have no real use for an AI they all seem equally stupid, but the birthday thing does make it seem even worse.
The out of touch part is the way they try to convince us to give them our data.
The reasoning they give us never really makes a lot of sense and bounces off the public, but they keep doing it. They might as well not bother, just declare "this is how it is, deal with it" instead of trying to pretend there's any good reason.
The reasoning they give us never really makes a lot of sense and bounces off the public,
Does it though? Lemmy is a bubble, unfortunately normies are using this shit.
Hell, even this site has been inundated with pro-AI sentiment over the past few weeks.
There's an illusion of popularity while AI is artificially cheap, but as the costs of both subscriptions and hardware balloons the huge userbase these AI companies tout to their investors are going to become a lot less interested. The reasoning they give won't actually hold up in the face of price hikes, because for most people AI is a toy and a way to cheat on homework.
But popularity never really mattered. They could just say “this is how it is, deal with it” and not bother trying to convince people AI is the future.
Wonder how fast that drains the battery
Why is this a fork of another project?
The original repo is: https://github.com/secondly-com/OpenPhone and is ahead of the above posted fork.
Edit: Analysis with identification of a MITM: https://lemmy.world/comment/24461999
It's also a source available license
They're getting lazy
I can't wait to install spyware on my phone that's built like shit and full of bugs.
