I used to have a site on Netlify but don't really trust them anymore, same with Cloudflare Pages or Vercel. What's the current safest option other than self hosting and not paying a lot?

EDIT: This is a static site made with 11ty, going to try writing some Marxism articles hopefully.

Mine is on Codeberg Pages. I don't know what your requirements would be for "safe" but it's free and Codeberg is open source.

Ah didn't know Codeberg had pages, just moved all my repos there. Will try that.

Codeberg pages has an uptime problem. I remember I came across an EU-based service that bypasses this problem by using codeberg's webhooks to build and host your website but I can't remember the name. [EDIT: I just checked and Codeberg seem to have migrated to a new backend for pages so maybe it is better now.]

Another option could be one of the tilde communities: https://tildeverse.org/

They can host a static website of yours but I don't know how well they play with search engine visibility and so on (if you care about that kind of stuff).

Another option could be a service like bearblog.dev or mataroa.blog if you are okay with not building your site from the ground up.

I'm still hosting my website at netlify. I can't see significant risk, at worst they'll stop hosting it and you'll have to move somewhere else. Your stuff will still be there in a git repo that is hosted in another provider and you also have at least one local copy on the computer you're working on it with.

At worst you might need to change netlify-specific config. I have some redirects configured there.

I like the little VPSs that are available at LowEndBox. Some can be dirt cheap, at about $1/month (paid upfront). They are small, but it's way more than enough for serving a static website. It could also serve RSS, some images, stuff like that, no problem.
