My mom went to university at 30, passed the bar, became a lawyer, had beef with the provincial court, passed the bar in the next province over at 50 out of spite and commutes across the border to practice law in a different province.
She wants to help people navigate immigration court and represent them for free after she retires.

She's always had the opinion that immigration and border control have way too much power to make snap judgements and send people packing without informing them of their rights.
She's not even an immigration lawyer, she's going to learn a whole legal framework after retirement just to stick it to the man.

I work in a law school. Last year we had a woman who was taking classes at 63 because it was "better engagement than the senior center," it was basically free, and she got a meal plan out of it to boot. While she didn't ultimately jive with the professors, she's now suing several of them, so she's still living her best life with the skills she just picked up. Bravo.

The way they used the exam software, and TBH they do take a lot of pointless liberties. She's autistic and read the directions incredibly literally, locking herself out of most portions of several key exams.
Honesty? Good.

Idk about other places but over 65 cuny is free so we get a lot of older students

Friend of mine could afford to retire early at 55. Did much of nothing for a few years. Then one day, he decided to go back to school. He's now well on his way to a PhD in a completely unrelated field. He says it made him excited about life again.
That's honestly what I would do if I could retire early, just go back to uni to study something that catches my fancy

Twitter is a weird place. I didn't start living and enjoying my life until I was in my 30s You can ask about my life as a teenager and a young man in his 20s and you'll be bored out of your mind with how much complaining I'll do.
Meet me now and be annoyed that I'm a giant dickhead who is completely full of himself, avoid me 15 years ago when I was a giant severely depressed guy.
Community college is awesome because you'll get to take an African literature studies course with 17 year olds straight out of high school, and retired 50 year old construction workers who decided to come back to school. All in the same room.
My first year of university I went for a japanese course, and we were mostly 18 year olds, some 20-somethings..., and a freshly retired lady. Eventually I decided it wasn't my thing, but I remember these few weeks rather fondly
My roommate in college thought that older students should be banned because they don't have anything more important to do than study, so they get excellent grades and throw off the grading curve for the "real" students. It was fucking up his partying schedule, having to study to keep up with the older, better students.
I told him to go fuck himself, and went to the job I worked through my entire college term.

...will be able to sue several companies into bankrupcy, and then keep going.
Now that I’m in my 40s with small group insurance, I, too, am more focused on the 63 year old who wants to go after big pharma than I am on some faulty idea of youth. Godspeed, my friend.
Going a different direction later in life is absolutely not "starting over." Your life experience comes with you, and if you're even slightly self-aware, that will give you a leg up. I decided to go back to school for a specific career when I was 30 after working in retail management for awhile, and by 36, I was in management in that new career, which was directly attributable to my prior work and life experience. Everything you experience contributes to who you are
I went back to college in my late 20s, attending a community college and watched exactly this happen with my older classmates, they all walked into much more senior roles thanks to their prior job experiences and soft skills from those earlier jobs in different fields. Heck I even managed to snag a better job than my 20 year old peers based on my work experience

It's not pedophilia if they don't want to fuck kids but are obsessed with youth and/or wanting to be young. Most of advertising is built around "it's fun to be young" and "youth and beauty". Capitalism as monetized envy. Make the people with money want the thing they can't buy.

This was going to be true even without going back to school FWIW. Even if you go in at 18 there’s going to be rich international (and domestic, but more likely with international) students who have never worked a day in their life and probably won’t after graduating. Do you and don’t worry about how long it took you to get around to it.

Only a relatively small portion of recent graduates with cs degrees are going to be making that kind of money, and even an even tinier portion of the total population. The Median personal income of the United States is only 44k a year.

I moved to the opposite side of the world in my early 30s. It's totally doable.
Seeing as I'm losing my job and things in Japan aren't great, I'm considering going halfway back if I can make it happen. (Edit: now in my mid 40s for context)
What job did you end up doing?
Backend software engineer. Many japanese companies are killing remote work. I might have a legal out as I own farmland, but even living as far away as I do has been too big an issue for a couple of potential jobs. Most remote jobs out of Canada or the US won't touch Asia/pacific because of the timezone (even though I could start early/late to ensure hand-off).
I don't want to live in Tokyo again (or a huge city like it), not would I have any chance of selling my house in the near term (the buyer would need to be a registered farmer which is not an easy hurdle). Farming is not enough to live on and save for retirement.
The idea currently bouncing around in my head is to try to secure a good position in the EU, pay off my japanese house while paying a company to maintain the land for me (we have a dearth of farmland for rent that no one is taking, so that's not an option) and then decide to go for PR -> citizenship in that country and then decide where to retire (which depends a lot on attitudes to foreigners and the state of Japan in 20-30 years). It's a mess, frankly.
lol. I’m close to 29 and I haven’t even started yet. Been stuck since I got out of uni. Do what you want. These days anyways it’s not like you have the option not to have multiple careers anyways.
I don’t have much hope for retirement. I just know it’s gonna be hell finding a job whenever shit gets fucked up by gestures broadly at everything
I’m 26 and have a shitty paying job plus a degree I don’t care to use. Probably will never retire but I can always retire myself.
