This reeks of desperation, that means he's scared. Don't let up, get out and VOTE!

It's not desperation, its not his money and if it actually happened, it would hamstring the incoming Dem president in 2028:

“Only I can make this promise to you,” he said, adding that the Republicans would have to win both the House of Representatives and the Senate for the money to be paid out.

And not only wouldn't it be his money, it wouldn't even be "real" money. There's not a trillion dollars laying around for this (literally what it would cost).

Since Trump's first term in 2016, the debt has doubled from 19 trillion to 40 trillion. This will get tacked on and the debt will be used as an excuse not to fund social programs.

With the US adult (over 18) population at about 269-270 million, $5000 each would be about $1.3 Trillion imaginary dollars.

Reminder that 80% of people don't read past the headline - most people will believe the lie even if they only see it here. News outlets know this, so the headline should be "Trump breaks the law and commits election fraud with false claims about payments to voters" or whatever.

Someone could argue you can't deliver those billions. That person might not be on Lemmy, but let me say this: if you vote for Trump and do get 5000$ from him, his batshit crazy politics will certainly cost you more than that. At the same time, if he loses and the US goes back to 'normal', you might not get elevently bajillion from this guy but you will get a more capable leader that takes economy advice more serious which at the end of the line will mean more money for everyone who is not a billionaire. It really is an easy choice. Don't vote for Trump, you're already finding out why you shouldn't. Don't do it please.

It will come from the same fund where the tariff refund came from. In other words, the one in his addled brain. Problem is he ends up stealing from that one too.

Alternative title for this article should be: Compulsive liar lies again, and the media still, inexplicable, pretends he sometimes tells the truth.

In a functioning democracy such an election promise is a crime, but so are Super PACS and gerry-mandering and data scraping from voters via scam sites or abusing of entirely different public databases. Also, in a functioning democracy such crimes get prosecuted.

    ~270,000,000 adult Americans X $5,000

    $1,350,000,000,000.

    Right.

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

Could this be per offense? I wonder if that would set a new Guinness record for longest sentence.

It reminds me of Batman the first Tim Burton one in 1989, in which the Joker promises to give away a ton of money in the town square (so he can kill them all with poison gas).

I'm also reminded of the anti-union signs that suggest getting a game console instead of paying union dues.

How on earth are they allowed to put this promise on the literal white house website? This country is a joke and danger to both itself and the rest of the world.

Will Mexico pay for it, too?

... by the way, how are you doing on releasing those tax returns? Any progress?

Also, I'm still eagerly awaiting your massive health care bill that you said you'd release.... 10 years ago.

Reminds me of the time when Joe Biden promised $2000 COVID relief checks, and then when Dems won Georgia, those checks magically became $1400 instead.

Don't trust a politician (and especially Donald) when they promise shit like this. This is the third time he's gone to this well. (Remember the imaginary DOGE dividend and the tariff rebate checks?)
