Huh, surprised nobody has mentioned Tuta Mail yet. Cheap monthly and annual plans, hosted Ex-US.

Plus I have a domain, forwarded through my tutamail account, so I have unlimited email receiving addresses, at-will. :)

No fascism, no privacy violations. I'm annoyed they don't support external clients and the mail rules are fairly limiting, but for my purposes it's well worth the costs.

Built in calendar also can import ICS files and it has effectively replaced Gcal for my own personal private use.

Infinite aliases are great. I have an address for every company, and that keeps my inbox very clean and tidy. If one of them turns out to sell my address to spammers, I will know exactly who to blame. It’s also trivial to set up a rule for deleting everything that is sent to that address.

    Yes!

Domain forwarding with a wild card should work with nearly any email provider vendor worth their salt, but I was glad to find Tuta does exactly two things and does them reasonably well, and at a price I can accept.

Degoogling has been a two year journey and I'm about 90% of the way done, but only my legacy email are driving me back to Thunderbird on select systems and someday I'll get to actually delete my entire Google account.

I use proton myself. I dont know about private browsers but it works with Thunderbird via its own decryption app Proton Bridge. Thats a good privacy solution (assuming its a secure desktop), and gives you a local backup of your email.

I run my email out of my closet. Postfix/Dovecot, using Mutt as my client.

Have you found it to be reliable? Online discussions around e-mail servers point to potential deliverability issues, so I was wondering about your experience with it.

Have a home server, and I've been considering self-hosting my e-mail. At least as an experiment, if it turns out to be inconsistent.

Yes, it's been very reliable. IME, the vast majority of people who complain about deliverability issues are spammersmarketers. They set up their own servers, send out a bunch of spamnewsletters, then complain that they get marked as spam. I don't have much sympathy for them.

Of course, I'm not saying that it never happens to legitimate email, but IME, that is increasingly rare, especially after setting up DKIM, SPF, and the like.

It also gets better over time as your IP gains a better reputation.

Fastmail 👍 Well worth the bucks imo. Super well thought out UI, private, and they work towards jmap over imap.

Grab a spare Raspberry Pi, plug an SSD into it, follow this guide, once every few months ssh in and apt update && apt upgrade.

That's been my setup for nearly 7 years now. It's been flawless, no deliverability issues, no maintinance headaches, just email that I own.

    I've used most private browsers.
Never had a problem with Proton not working.

It doesn't use webgl, so that's not an issue. No idea what else you're blocking that could be a problem.

Tuta (Germany) and Murena Workspace are good mail providers. Murena (France) apart is an excelent all in one substitute for GDrive and other Google services. They also sell Fairphone with own OS (eOS)

I hate those kind of tables companies provide because of course ot's always biased on their favour, practically useless for that matter tbh.

Maybe, but it's really what Murena offers, + own Mobile OS and also Smartphones by FairPhone, even a special OS for kids, it's a whole good infrastructure, not only a mailprovider. All European and OpenSource. It's way more as offered by others, apart of Google. I didn't find a better service to substitute Google.

Mainly ignore it till someone calls me and asks “did you see that email?”

I use (and created) Port87. Its goal is to reduce spam, but the way it works has a byproduct of being inherently rather private. You give out a different address to each place.

It is not end-to-end encrypted, so if that’s a deal breaker for you, I’m afraid it won’t work. That might be in the extended roadmap, but there are a lot of other features I need to build first (IMAP, CardDAV, mailing lists, and a better composition experience are my top priorities right now).

Probably not much help but I purchased a domain to have my own email, I can then have a separate alias for every single login/site, that way I know who leaks my email and just move on to a different alias. I don't even need to manually create email aliases and can make something up on the fly. All emails then come to a single, private inbox.

Doesn't the website say you can encrypt it youself and actually recommends doing so or something like that?

Cool, since it's a good service (at least from my limited experience of it). Do you have an more Info about it?

Oh, I tried it and it does encrypt it. you use this extension and it uses a keychain on that extension. The text is encrypted and the extension kinda draws on top of the mail you were reading making a little window with the unencrypted text after you input your password. I think it's glitched for me rn tho since it doesn't encrypt it when I mail myself but it might be spmething silly, I've not really tried that hard to fix it. Well either that or it works it mysterious ways.

I recently got Stalwart running with Bulwark as the front end to actually send emails. I have Stalwart behind Caddy for https and Stalwart only exposes http because I don't want to mess with pop and imap. Instead I have it using JMAP, which Bulwark is designed for, because it's simpler and more secure. Receiving emails works from some basic testing against my personal Gmail account. Sending email was a bit more complicated, but I ended up using SMTP2GO for outgoing mail and it worked in aforementioned testing. Their free tier is more than enough for personal email and I can switch to a different smtp relay in the future if I choose to.

I use purelymail, I've been really liking it so far. They do like a "pay as you go" kinda pricing, so it ends up being pretty dang cheap, even if you get/send a decent amount of emails. Can use your own domains names, yadda yadda.

I might give self hosting an email server a go one day, but people seem pretty mixed on if its worth it.

Mailbox with encryption of incoming emails. It works with IMAP clients, and I own the keys. Other security minded people can also send end2end encrypted emails without needing to use the same provider.

I use mailbox.org because both proton and tuta do not support IMAP, which is generally needed to use a 3rd party client. Mailbox.org is also pretty cheap and is pretty private as far as the non-E2EE providers go. And in terms of E2EE it is going to be used so rarely that is basically doesn't matter, the type of person that would use tuta/proton would probably be willing to setup PGP with you, and E-mail isn't a secure communications platform anyways, so you might as well just use Signal, XMPP, briar, etc...

Mailbox.org is decent. But 1€ per month. I need to switch my stuff to it and pay before the trial ends.

Currently I don't use a privacy-focused mail provider because all of them suck in a way that demotivates me to put in the time and money to migrate and it's an insecure protocol anyways. But for privacy-focused email providers Proton seems like the least shitty option right now.

  • I've got my own domain on Zoho mail, not sure if it's still free for custom domains.

But just for fun I might set up Stalwart with an SMTP relay through SMTP2GO or similar.
