The beta for the hotly anticipated World of Warcraft: Forever has been marred by fans of the streamer Asmongold who have filled the game’s public spaces with spam and slurs. To fix the issue, a player named Solastro created a mod called OlympusMute that hides any chats from players associated with Asmongold’s multiple associated guilds and fandom. Funnily enough, Solastro told 404 Media he used to be a big Asmongold fan too.

OlympusMute, named after the main Asmongold guild Olympus, is a client side mod that creates a mute list designed to prevent players from seeing anything from players associated with Asmongold. It works simply by hiding chat messages from players with Olympus in their name. It also auto-declines group and guild invites from the muted players.

Solastro is a longtime WoW player who told 404 Media he found the Asmongold related spam in WoW: Forever intolerable. He said it's worse when Asmongold himself logs in. “The trade chat is spammed with people wanting to get near him, on his layer, etc. The guild invite spam is prevalent, as he's encouraged his followers to invite as many people as possible to Olympus,” he said.

The mod, essentially, is an attempt at a nuclear block. It “hides all player chat from muted players: Say, Yell, Emote, Whisper, General/Trade/custom channels, Guild, Party, Raid, Raid Warning, and Instance chat” and “hides their chat bubbles in the open world,” according to its description.

There are good reasons players may want to never hear from Asmongold or his guild. “Turned on @Asmongold stream for 3 minutes and just instantly see them harassing some random player and spamming shit like this in stormwind,” X user @mrfishpsirit said in a post on X. The account shared screenshots of chat bubbles calling to “deport all greenskins” and sexually assault Palestine. Asmongold himself replied to the post with a list of slurs he’d invented for the game’s fictional races.

“When the army of followers is in a single location, the chat is filled with /yell messages that often include slurs (with special characters to not get flagged), racist chants, misogynistic terms, etc. It's something I heavily dislike, but it was too pervasive to be able to /ignore each player, so I found another solution just to filter chat,” Solastro added.

My time playing MMOs has been just like my time in metal music. Either the biggest raging assholes or the nicest people with very little in between.

Classic is especially bad about this since it requires a much bigger time commitment than retail. That tends to attract a very degenerate crowd (in additional to the more normal people)

Retail has a lot more furries from what I can tell

Rather than making me likely to try the mod for this game, this article makes me never want to interact with wow ever again. Sounds like a cesspool.

And thats sad because I genuinely miss certain aspects of wow and would love to have a go again with all the content they’ve released since like 2009 when I stopped playing. Or with this new entry.

If you don't mind trading the endless progression treadmill for actually fun content then Guild Wars 2 is where it's at. Genuinely the chillest, most helpful community and the best open world content in the genre.

The PvP in GW2 is genuinely good too, at least from a gamefeel perspective.

WvW is the only good large-scale PvP content I've played in an MMO. Even though they neutered the community with world restructuring, as long as you can find a group you vibe with it's still loads of fun.

Why is Asmongold so important in WOW? I just know him because of memes, but this is ridiculous.

    Big number on purple site

And then all the standard shady alt-right bollocks around elevating fuckos that say racist shit. Bannon probably pays his bills

Literally YouTube too. It's fucking disgusting. Watch a few video game related videos and suddenly it's "hey look at asmonfuck, hey here's fox news, hey how about this video of some fuck worshipping Trump! Did you want to see this video about liberals getting owned? How about liberal hivemind videos?" It's fucking infuriating

I almost exclusively watch gaming videos on YouTube but don't get recommended rightwing pipeline bullshit.

Maybe it's because I watch people like SpiffingBrit, RTGame, Mind Pulp, and Game Grumps who are basically the opposite of those types of channels.

I watch a few game streamers as well. The only videos regarding asmon I see are generally discussing what a pathetic dumbass he is. But then I watch a large amount of heavily left leaning podcast as well. Vanguard, Majority Report etc. Oh and a shit ton of PBS.

Nah, that's any YouTube use. Unless you actively refuse to engage with right wing content, it will be pushed at you.

If you don't engage, they'll try to get you to bite with occasional right wing crap.

I routinely delete my YT history and it's true almost all paths lead nearby, but gaming related videos are definitely an "algorithmic shortcut" to chud bait.

Edit: also Reacher and Breaking Bad clips

I don't play wow and I hate him and never watched anything or any wow content

But the way he became THE wow streamer is by making content that was "to the point" and as short as possible

Like imagine "how do you make money in wow" and the video is 1m20s with the most effective method and 0 clickbait nonsense or "hey guys here, wowguy82 with another video about blah blah blah"

Allegedly he wasn't always batshit maga alt right but as someone who does not do anything wow related it's hard to imagine that

At first, by "Mod" , I thought it meant moderator. Which would have been hilarious.

Why do they need a beta for 30 year old content?

  • source
  • hideshow 3 child comments
  • [–] 2 points 1 week ago

First it’s not exactly 30 year old content. There seems to be an actual effort to make a new WoW game based on the things fans like about the older content. There is a lot that is still “classic” but they have added a decent amount of changes.

To answer your question though, IMO they are using the Beta for a few things:

    1. An end of Q3 money grab with just enough delay to push the “release” into Q4
    2. A hype machine for the actual release.
    3. A test of their new server infrastructure. The game is now “realmless” so it is essentially a mega server only separated by your chosen play style ( PVE, PVP, RP, Hardcore). I’m not even sure if they are going to separate regions (NA/EU) or if they are trying to make it more or less a global server.

Me, a normal FFXIV player: “I thought MMO communities were super nice and helpful.*”

*The reason I bounced from WoW is because I started to hate the people I was interacting with, and FFXIV almost has none of this shit. You couldn’t pay me to play WoW again.

Walking around town, it's likely you will get some speck of shit on your shoes eventually. With these chucklefucks shitting everywhere, it's like wading through a field of manure.
