I used to believe racism in the United States was overstated.

Sure, it existed. But it's not something widespread. Common. The claim americans are racists is ridiculous.

Well...I was wrong.

"Zohran Mamdani is a terrorist"

"Mamdani supports ISIS and HAMAS"

"New York City faces sharia law"

"Mamdani wants to MURDER jews"

The amount of shit published about this guy is absolutely insane.

He recently attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony.

At some point, he greeted congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and smiled for 5 seconds.

Immediatly, politicians went wild

Senator Ted Cruz:

Congresswoman Mary Miller :

Speaker Mike Johnson:

Here is the video. You can clearly see that he was stoic. He hugged her. Then he immediatly went back to being stoic.

Dude smiled 5 SECONDS in a 5 hour ceremony and they accuse him of celebrating 9/11

At the same ceremony, JD Vance and Howard Lutnick laughed and joked.

No one cares. They are white.

The US is more racist than I ever imagined.

Not to say it’s not 100% true that America has a lot of racism, but also realize comment sections are flooded with bots and paid shills making it look way worse.

Be at funeral. See someone who you were not sure if they were coming. Ahh glad you could make it! Smiles when greeting them

    Clearly happy the person died

I mean — immigrants and people of color, especially balck women, have been shouting at us for generations that we are a racist country.

We started as a racist country, we inspired other countries to be racist (al la Jim Crow inspiring Hitler).

We’ve ALWAYS been this racist, it was just that for a little while people were a bit more quiet about it.

I just think white people are really good at pretending bad things aren’t happening all around them, just as long as it’s not to them.

My ex-wife's grandparents lived just outside Chicago. Her grandfather used to hang out at the local mall, because he wanted to practice his Spanish by talking to random Latino families that passed by. He was so casually racist, that he would occasionally have someone threaten to kick the shit of him over something he said...and he had absolutley no idea why they were even mad at him. And I'm not kidding, he was probably the sweetest old man you're ever going to meet...would give anyone the shirt off his back, and genuinely didn't mean any of it in a negative way. He was just so saturated in white privilege, that had no idea that most of the things he said were completely inappropriate.

As a Canadian, I always marveled at the idea that he was "one of the nice ones". That if you put him on one end of the racist spectrum, there was an entire range of people out there, that were progressively worse than him. And in US culture...this was just "normal" behavior.

There is certainly a difference between oblivious accidental racism and intentional hatred based racism. Neither are good, but one is certainly a bigger problem.

I could argue that it’s actually the oblivious accidental racism that is the bigger problem because that is what reinforces structural and system racism. The blatant rager is more visible and obviously dangerous, so can be countered or avoided fairly easily.

Maybe we have different ideas of the oblivious racist. They should have their rights taken away kinda people I would group in with the hateful ones.

I think we agree on who we're talking about, but I'm just talking about scale. The hateful ones are an immediate threat to the people around them, but the oblivious ones are a far larger number of people and thus drive societal forces that cause statistical problems that cumulatively do more damage than one-off murders and such.

The easiest segment of the population to manipulate is racist and so politicians and the media weaponize it to get what they want.

The scary thing is I think Americans are less racist than Europeans and Asians, Americans are just presented with more opportunities to be racist.

There are more than a billion racists who love playing their part. You described why it’s happening, yes. That doesn’t mean those effected can just ignore it.

You have a privilege and are waving it in those people who don’t have it faces.

“Just ignore the racism that affects your life everyday!”

Thanks for the advice I guess :(

Imagine your job security depends on tweeting about the mayor smiling at an event to inflame racist natonalists. The political leadership of the US spends more time on bullshit like this than governing, but the fact that it's effective is the real sad part.

They can say whatever they want as long as he's the only politician delivering material prosperity to working people. The price of rent and groceries will always be more important than sharia law or whatever nonsense the neoliberals come up with.

Racism is the cornerstone of Republican power. its why they are so hostile to anything that threatens racism, like education, and empathy, and moral values.

As President Lyndon Johnson once said.. "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Yeah. Thought we were kinda winning the war against homophobia, racism, and all that.

    Before trump.

But then trump showed up, and he said he was going to drain the swamp. He accomplished that feat. Every horrible human being living in the slime at the bottom of the swamp took a big breath of air, rose up into the daylight, and make their presence loudly known.

I had no idea the seething mass of willful ignorance, hatred, selfishness, and racism existed as deeply as it did here. It was like people all took their masks off and said “Here I am, and I hate every good thing you stand for.”

Let's all take a moment to remember that a lot of racist online accounts were unmasked as bots from Russia and other foreign countries.

Not saying that bigotry doesn't exist IRL in the US (as an American myself I can confirm it absolutely does), but don't judge a country by what its "citizens" are saying online.

To be fair none of the racist fucks i have known ever posted racist shit on the internet, and didn't say anything racist in public, but behind closed doors in a safe suburban home they would tell you what they thought. These are the people who say "it's not polite to discuss politics" if they think you disagree with them, and they all vote, they want the far right world they just know it hurts people and they don't want to get yelled at.

russian bots came on the scene suddenly on the reddit around 2016, right after trump won his 1st stolen election. i was calling out how news article are associated with russia quite alot, one of the first significant things happen in 2018, banning were becoming increasingly common of misconstrued critcisim of the conservatives. now every other large sub had become hypersensitive over the talk of potential racism in any form. Putin figured out early on they can use this as a distraction, and it worked.

I felt this way seeing how they treated Obama during his tenure. There was so much bullshit mudslinging, and at one point I said to myself: oh, it's simple racism.

Funny, because my biggest complaint with him was that he didn't address some of the worst abuses of the Bush years.

Social media is a caricature. It doesn’t represent reality, don’t buy any of it.

But the racism is real, deep, and more subtle but scary. It’s shit said behind closed doors in my family, and that has left terrible imprints on generations.

    Absolutely.

But it's a bit more than that too, because it doesn't just have to be race. It's just differences, and race, religion, gender, regionality, politics and more all play a part in it.

It gets a little confusing for folks because most people (rightfully) aghast at the situation latch onto the issue most close to them as the primary one, but when dealing with bigots, it's usually more of a grab bag.

For example, did people not vote for Kamala because she was black, a woman, or a Democrat? From data it's likely most people's order of disgust went Democrat - > Black - > Woman, but that's definitely not all of them.

For Mamdani, for most people who hate him, it would appear to me that it's because he's Muslim. The fact he's brown too is just icing to them.

White culture in the US is very sensitive to overt racism. they really detest it. but if you let them, with a nice little cloth to hide behind, they will be the most grossly racist people you've ever interacted with. every news story about ICE harming brown children warms their hearts, as long as they don't have to see it or do it, or be told about it in a public place, that would be embarrassing.

I don’t know what to say: I can’t believe it either. Granted this is from a white male perspective and I realize I’ll never even notice most of it, but wtf?

    • Before the current MAGA, I hadn’t seen blatant racism in many years, not even private jokes, we seemed to be making progress on systemic racism, and in general had a more diverse, healthy society (obviously I’m not claiming racism didn’t exist, just that we seemed to be making solid progress, from my privileged viewpoint)
    • Now blatant racism is popular? We’re reverting any recent progress? We’re saying the quiet part out loud? Even the worst parts of humanity are encouraged to speak up _and find people not ashamed to support it? And people get elected despite that? And the only federal agency with a massively increased budget seems based mostly on racism?

I used to believe conservatives were just people with different ideas how to make things work better for all of us, but wtf? How did this happen?

conservatives were always racist, they pretended not to be in the past. some just learn how to not fully express it, because thier livelyhoods, jobs or family relationships depend on it. now that trump has been giving the ok to say what you want, they have shown thier true colors. a little manosphere media helps too.
