I hate it when states use their death statistics to push a little message on their billboards:

OVER 200 KIILLED THIS YEAR... so: ...Buckle up! ... Don't Drink & Drive! ... Obey the Speed Limit!

Supporting the lie that safety is possible with cars.

Comparing numbers with similar develope countries show that improvements can be made.. significant improvements at that

The sign warning us about traffic deaths is the improvement, in their eyes.

I'm not saying things can't get better, but they don't get better from people making better individual choices, which is what that sign clearly implies.

But I am also saying things can't get THAT much better without giving people options to get out of cars without getting killed by cars.

One traffic death is of course too many, but it is good to see the trend moving downward by about 10% per year and also across all kinds of mobility. Any idea as to why? Hopefully it shows a sign of building out better pedestrian infrastructure.

Pedestrian 118 is just idiotic. I understand car accidents can happen, but a pedestrian??? That tells me you purposely ignore crosswalks or drive recklessly in slow speed areaa

I think they mean that drivers ignore crosswalks. I also first assumed they meant pedestrians ignore crosswalks, but in the context that doesn't make any sense.

And yeah, I agree. Car accidents with fatal outcome are expected in areas with high speeds, but those areas shouldn't be where pedestrians usually walk. This makes 25% of road fatalities being pedestrians seem quite insane.
