The DesktopEditors github repo appears to have actual releases now, with multiple download options for various Linux distros, plus Windows and MacOS. While some refinement may still be needed, this represents a usable release without requiring manual building.

Do they support actual standards, or are they insisting on implementing a broken version of Microsoft's format?

Edit: to answer myself, they are still missing proper ODF support (https://github.com/Euro-Office/DocumentServer/issues/114). And by the rest of the issue board, they should have realised Microsoft will never let them have parity on OOXML.

I do not understand why they used OnlyOffice as a starting point rather than LibreOffice. I'm guessing because it can be embedded in web shit? I can see why NextCloud pushed for it.

Less dependent on American tech would be to stop promoting an American format as a first choice.

It's the format that's actually being used. If you want to make a difference you have to meet people where they are, not where you want them to be.

Yep, this is a product from Eastern Europe, our public institutions have decades worth of files in Microsoft's formats that we still work with on daily basis and that nobody will ever rewrite from scratch. It's not necessary to support every new feature, but opening stuff from 2000s and 2010s and saving it without compatibility issues is like mandatory if you want to ship an office application here. It's understandable that a company targeting our local markets prioritized OOXML and not ODF. I do hope the Western fork puts more effort into the open format now though.

The format that's being used is the proprietary one whatever MS is calling their office nowadays shits out not the actual ooxml standard. This is just going to reinforce MS propaganda that alternatives are inferior when the office suit fails to properly open files on it's own preferred format.

Sure but ODF support doesn't conflict with that, by all means they should attempt MS compatibility while it's still so dominant, but not supporting ODF is a choice that will only ensure things will never change.

Because every other option is objectively worse in one way or another.

The only upside to other options is basically just a moral one. And at a point you kinda have to stop giving a damn about morals and just use what works if you don't want to endlessly waste time and tax payer money.

It just is what it is unfortunately.
