If there's one person in the world I trust to call out AI for being stupid, it's Linus Torvalds. I think he can handle it.

Of all things to be tainted by AI, Linux was the one I wanted it to happen to least. He should have just handed it over if he cannot be bothered any more.

Great. I guess I'll stay on pre-ai version for as long as possible..

Curious why this is so downvoted? Is it not a reliable report? Are people just confused and down voting news they don't like? For news posts downvotes work best to help prevent us from clicking into garbage low quality news links that waste our time. This is something I don't like but want to know about!

meh, it's his toy/joke project, he can break it if he likes. If you don't like it, then Fork it.

Torvalds has one of the best takes on AI so far. It's a useful tool for experienced programmers, that takes care of a lot of the tedious tasks that humans are just not geared for.

Lets imagine for a second, what programming will be like in 2030. Tell me, do you think there will be less AI assisted code, or more, than there is now?

And let me ask this: will traditional programming be useless in 2030?

If the answers are, more and yes, then I understand why one can claim that Torvalds is destroying linux. Otherwise, it's foolish.

IMHO it vastly depends on the evolution of AI. If they will gain the ability to understand the context they are in then probably there will be more, else it would still be usefull only to automate simple and repetitive things.

We need distinguish between master programmers who can evaluate AI-generated code and submit it for proper review, and first year interns being told to add 45 features to Friday's update.

Also people act like only AI code is bad quality and full of bugs. I’ve seen enough legacy codebases, and my own side projects, to know that AI does not have a monopoly on slop. We humans are perfectly capable of that ourselves. It’s the code review process that prevents that being merged, AI or not

Good thing that pipeline of people isn't under existential threat. If we get rid of all the interns, problem solved. AI can do that! /s

The mindset of programming is completely different than rubber stamping/tweaking slop... don't know where they are going to get real developers in 20 years.

I look at it like COBOL coding. In 20 years they can call me out of retirement and pay me a boatload to maintain the garbage mess that is all that's left.

Is there any amount of money that can unfuck a codebase after 20 years of rot?

Don't you know that LLM is pure evil and everyone who uses it becomes an idiot? At least that is what those anti-LLM fanatics preaching.

Yes of cource. Even if a troll you got it completely right dude.

There was a time when no improvements to the kernel required AI.

May I suggest you ignore the troll and answer the person who asked the question. I'd like to know as well, I'm fairly clueless about this stuff and trying to get a better understanding, other than "slop" level answers.
