A report just in from the Kernel Maintainers Summit on 8 October reveals just how full AI slop the Linux kernel project has gone. And so has project leader Linus Torvalds.

Nothing in this article hints to "slop". Or you and I have very different definitions.

And if you come around with a claim like that is prefer a link to an accepted PR or patch any day.

I'd trust a guy who tamed hundreds of nerds writing code for three decades with taming autocomplete

Maybe it's time to just leave tech behind and return to monkey.

I switched to Linux many years ago, but now I am a bit worried which path it will take.

Jesus the pearl clutching and over reacting in here is ridiculous.

Exactly what do you think is going to happen that is so horrible?

Some of it for me at least is moral. They stole all our data to create this shit and are selling it back to us, it’s destroying the planet and communities near these stupid data centers, it’s constantly being used and pushed to further human suffering, surveillance, pricing, war and death etc. I really want no part in it, but that’s becoming increasingly difficult.

Then on top of that, it hallucinates and lies. Chances for bugs or things getting snuck in increase. Since people didn’t write the code, they don’t understand it, so maintainability goes down.

This is called a "self correcting problem". If it doesn't work people will correct by either "not using it" or "learning to use it more effectively".

Do you think everyone is just going to throw their hands up and be like "well the ai done fucked up again, what're you gonna do?"

Windows and I'm sure apple's path are already there, but being Linux means this is fully public. I hope Linus and the rest of the developers who are starting to lean on LLMs take a good look inwards.

That’s reality. Deal with it. That genie is out of the bottle. You’re not getting it back. And you’re not getting it back whether you are a photographer who’s out of work. Those things are gone, right? Because you can fake pictures so much better now. Or you’re a programmer that has to learn to deal with a new reality.

I think actually on the programming side, we’re in a fairly good spot. I really think that AI will be a tool and it will make people more productive. I think that vibe coding is great for getting into programming. I think it’s going to be a horrible thing to maintain.

    Rare Torvalds L

Also case #10262973 of someone thinking that genAI will replace jobs they aren’t well versed in while their own job, which is under equal pressure of genAI, is pretty safe since AI could never fully replace their own work.

Authors think AI replaces Musicians, Musicians think AI replaces IT, IT thinks AI replaces Photographers, Photographers think AI replaces Artists and so on and so on and also vice versa and across. Everyone is doomed except for us amirite

Except they often also think their own field is only being undercut by ignorant people pushing genAI where it doesn't fit because they don't know about the minute details that contribute to expertise in the field.

Somehow, completely missing the point reflected in their own belief.

i've been planning to install netbsd to my servers, since they banned ai slop.

I know it's very recent but the latest models no longer produce slop. This article would have made sense 6 months ago. Today it just tells me that Torvalds is surprisingly up-to-date and whoever wrote this is behind the times.

no guys don't you understand! Nowadays AI is good! It was bad but now it's good guys I swear. It doesn't produce bad output anymore but only if you use the latest version! Really! You're prompting it wrong and this AI in particular is not good, you're not using the latest version!!!

Yeah I've been hearing this for months, if not years now

Well now it's true. I think people said it earlier because they didn't really care about the slop. I do care, and so I would have totally agreed with you 3 months ago. But since Astra they made a huge leap (way beyond what the benchmarks show). Kind of annoying because I'd like to use them for personal projects but they're really expensive. I tried some of the cheaper models and they're still in slop land.

In a way this is all great because vibe coding actually works for real now. Tools that I've wanted for years I can now make in a few days of prompting. But also... society is not ready for this. And I would like to have a job. Still, sticking your head in the sand isn't going to help.

Programmers suck. I've seen some write some terrible code. You may say "they're just exceptions" or "they're just not doing it right"...

If you can't get a good llm to produce good code then you're definitely working at it.
