I have a dream that one day, all apartments will rise up, and together live out the true meaning of their creed: 'Together we gay, united we trans!' — Martha Lucy Queen Jr.

A picture of the list of communities on 'lemmy.blahaj.zone' asking the question, why there are two communities under the name '196'.

og 196 team (on lemmy i mean, the og og is of course r/196) wanted to move the community to lemmy.world, and shut down !196@lemmy.blahaj.zone. a lot of people did not like this, so this community was formed in response. after that, the og 196 realized their mistake and reopened their community. so now we have two 196s on LBZ, on top of the one on .world which is much less active (but still alive)

    In apartment terms:

    The 196 landlords wanted to move to another city because they didn't like this city's mayor's authority. The 196 tenants like the city, because it's inclusive and the mayor is a pretty cool gal, and saw the landlords' city of choice as significantly worse for a LOT of reasons. Regardless, the landlords locked the building and expected all the tenants to move with them at a moment's notice.

    So some cool people found a different building in the original city and used that, all while telling the original landlords how dumb and bad they were for their little stunt. The original landlords eventually relented and opened the old building, but the new building remained with different landlords.

    Others have provided a good overview, so I don't have much to add. If you'd like to know more, here is a good place to start. Also, this thread gives a decent snapshot of how the community reacted.

    Wow, thank you! Sorry, if my ignorance might have come across as rude. I have to say, its history makes me appreciate this community even more. I often have a bit of a hard time fitting in and this place feels cozy. Love what you've all done with the curtains! :)

    Two households, not alike in dignity,
    The fediverse, is where we lay our scene,
    From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
    Where civil bits make civil hands unclean.
    From forth the brooding loins of these two foes
    A pair of star-cross’d lovers go offline;
    Whose misadventur’d piteous overthrows
    Doth with their absence bury their parents’ strife.
    The fearful passage of their [removed] love,
    And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
    Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
    Is now the twelve hours’ traffic of our post;
    The which if you with patient eyes attend,
    What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
