Google is evil, sure, but the Finnish government sold the land in first place. I'm all for condemning an evil corporation, but why are we letting these government officials off the hook? Do we seriously think the government was surprised when they found out what Google did? Would people be less pissed if the deforestation had happened after the permits had been issued?

Google cleared the land without the proper permits. Just because you own a piece of land doesn't mean you can do what you want with it.

lol, okay. The people who sold them the land thought Google executives were going to do what with it, go on hikes? Some bird watching? Of fucking course they're going to build massive data centers. If Google had applied for the permits they would've been issued and we would be seeing the same result.

If Google had applied for the permits they would’ve been issued and we would be seeing the same result.

Then why didn't they apply for them?

You're a Google apologist, how does that feel?

Google didn't bother to apply for the permits because they're so massive they can do what they like and just deal with the resulting slap on the wrist. It's all the same to them. The fate of that forest was already decided when the Finnish government agreed to sell it to an evil data center company. Grow up.

Ah, to be an over-confidently insecure teenager.

    Let's work through this one:

If Google had applied for the permits they would’ve been issued and we would be seeing the same result.

Google didn’t bother to apply for the permits because they’re so massive they can do what they like and just deal with the resulting slap on the wrist.

Why wouldn't they just deal with the bureaucracy instead of having to pay a bunch of lawyers and then likely a fine?

Answer: because this kind of arrogant behaviour is typical of big corporations when they think they're unlikely to get their way playing by the rules.

edit: (That's the over confident bit)

    And here's the insecure bit:

    Go fuck yourself.

If you own any land, the construction and layout on that still needs a permit. Eg: You can't build a house of your desired floors even in a residentially zoned plot on 100% of the land.

Before you begin construction, you need to file the plan with an architect and get it approved.

Owning a land isn't a carte blanche certificate

Right, but none of this applies to Google. Owning land is absolutely carte blanche to do whatever they want for these arrogant and massive international corporations. They've demonstrated this over and over. Those trees were doomed the moment the Finnish government sold it.

They knew what they were doing. If they didn't, they're incompetent. Either way they should lose their next elections over this, or resign.

Naw, move to an unzoned county anywhere in the US, you can build how you like. Insurance might not be doable, but you can work around that.

In Kansas you can even build your own elevator still.

Finland should kick Google out of the country for this. I'm sure many want to.

Better idea, utilise what the US did in, I think, Yellowstone - capture the wolves then air-drop them (with parachutes, we don't want to kill poor wolves) onto the Google campus in California.

I think you'll find that not only the Finns won't have to kick Google out, but that what remains of Google will, in its own accord, pull out of Finland.

I don't know all of the specifics but it couldn't have been an invasion. Some Finnish authorities must have allowed this american company within it's borders. Americans are gonna america.

What I don't get is the need for 1,300 acres. That's a shit load of surface area, about 325 Walmart buildings.

For such a land purchase, maybe the intended purpose and plans should be approved before the sale so they couldn't go, oops. It's easier to pay a fine later than get approval first so this type of people will keep doing it wherever they want to and still be wealthy and free from the rules. They can and have cut communications to countries at their whim.

Build highbrise datacenters. Less foot print ans much cheaper to air cool. 50 floors up build heat pipes all thé way up into a huge aluminium dissipator.
