The Social Security Administration is cutting staff from its communications office, and will rely on social media posts instead of press releases to update the media and the public.

Social Security Commissioner Linda Kerr-Davis told employees in a call Thursday that regional offices will no longer issue press releases or letters. Instead, the agency will be using X to communicate to the press and the public.

Is there not some kind of law regarding general access to government notices? I shouldn't have to sign up for a private website to keep up with public services.

[–] kambusha@sh.itjust.works 148 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How dare you question? Off to El Salvador.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 84 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Understandable, I've never said thank you even once.

[–] hydration9806@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago

Probably not even wearing a suit smh

[–] MisterOwl@lemmy.world 66 points 3 days ago

Is there not some kind of law

Maybe. But nobody's willing to enforce it anyway.

[–] aeshna_cyanea@lemm.ee -3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Purely hypothetically if musk were to become president would x then become a public website

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

LOL no, America doesn't nationalize private holdings. Presidents would (normally) have to divest themselves from the company at least, but trump has set a new precedent there too so who knows if future presidents will adhere.

Everyone involved in this decision should be shot.

What happened to all the republicans crying about "government shouldn't be picking winners and losers"? Oh right, they're hypocritical little shits that should be in the ground.

So tired of everything trash because like a third of the country has less emotional maturity than a toddler.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Republicans pick winners and losers in their misanthropic hierarchy. Now they own the government, so the government is them.

[–] RowRowRowYourBot@sh.itjust.works 83 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That needs to be illegal immediately

[–] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 23 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

snap "it's illegal. "

-But... But nothing changed?

Since when has the Trump administration cared about following the law or had any consequences for breaking them?

Elon's wet fucking dream

[–] rational_lib@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well to be fair, the social security administration denied the report.

In a post on X.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 4 points 2 days ago

And there is a big chance those of us clearly not on there can’t see them post about that denial.

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 87 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Because X is definitely the right place for that, and something older generations will have access to and know how to use…

Can we stop this timeline now?

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 47 points 3 days ago

Yeah... This is literally designed to hurt people and help Twitter. Some of my older family members don't even have a smart phone. And if they do the only social media they use is Facebook.

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ishamael tried. If it weren't for that bastard Lews Therin, maybe we would have some peace.

[–] trashboat@midwest.social 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Don’t ever see a whole lot of casual WoT references lol

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 5 points 2 days ago

After 20 years of nobody having heard of my favorite, entirely too long to recommend, book series, I am an absolute shill for the show. (Without the "smart enough to get paid for it" part.) 😆

[–] singletona@lemmy.world 49 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, it's amazing to shift all public facing communications to a privately owned platform, and thus tying participation with BEING on that platform.

To quote @jjjalljs 'Everyone involved in this decision should be shot.'

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 days ago

especially that you aren't even allowed to read posts if you don't have an account, and if you don't log in, and by extension if you don't accept the privately owned profit driven platform's terms of service and privacy policy

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 63 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Nazi government uses Nazi platform. We did see this coming.

[–] Shdwdrgn@mander.xyz 52 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've said it before and I'll say it again... a social media post is NOT an official government communication. I don't mind it being used in addition to public channels to help spread the word further, but if you are going to use one platform then you should be required to use all of them to ensure all affected people receiving the same information... and I don't see them posting on Bluesky or Mastodon or even Reddit.

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don’t think they should be required to use all of the networks, just the open ones, i.e. no account registration required, easily accessible

[–] Shdwdrgn@mander.xyz 21 points 3 days ago

That's a good point... if you can't read messages and discussions without a login, then it's not really facilitating public notification.

[–] slingstone@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why is this not a conflict of interest?

[–] Parsizzle@lemm.ee 39 points 2 days ago

I feel like that whole concept flew the coop a looong time ago

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 39 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

that's smart because your core audience who would most be interested in your communications totally use social media /s

also you can't even fucking view posts unless you're logged on

[–] heavydust@sh.itjust.works 44 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Twitter, the web site that is broken if you don't have an account? That's seriously fucked up.

[–] yuknowhokat@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

It's also broken if you try to use Firefox to access it

[–] taladar@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

I assume you meant to write "if you don't have an account"

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 30 points 3 days ago

This is so retarded I couldn't stop myself from laughing, I even had a little tear in my eye. This is what people voted for! Satire has become meaningless, every day is an absurd joke now.

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Complete trash. There no reason we should have to use Musks garbage.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago

You don't support government programs designed to help struggling small businesses run by immigrants?

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 days ago

No sure whether to crosspost this to c/NotThe Onion or c/NaziOnion

[–] gargolito@lemm.ee 19 points 3 days ago

Great. Social Security incels.

[–] astrsk@fedia.io 15 points 3 days ago

Well, it was fun paying into it for 20 years. Glad I never calculated the payout as part of my retirement strategy.

[–] commander@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And X will continue declining in popularity along with Tesla. More competitiors need to spring up against starlink so anyone on that including the government can dump that piece of shit

I was listening to Terry Gross interview some broadband experts about broadband legislation the other day and they mentioned that the White House added a Starlink connection to "boost the WiFi signal." The White House. Probably the single most well connected building on the planet, added a shitty Starlink connection. It was not lost on Terry or the panelists that the whole charade was nothing more than the President of the United States abusing his position to effectively advertise one of his cronies' products.

[–] Cocopanda@futurology.today 4 points 2 days ago

I’m not worried about this shit. Because I’m not retiring or getting to that age anytime soon. But Godspeed to this nation. Making it out of this mess in a few years.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Musk's long term corporate welfare strategy is forcing all government functions to be subcontracted out through his companies. His companies wouldn't have long term stability without subsidies, this is literally all he knows.

[–] hddsx@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

No I get Musk. What I don’t get his which bonehead decided that was a good idea with no backups.

[–] oakward@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

I am still trying to understand how this is a relevant technology post to the world

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Musk decided.
