Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

It’s not the correct answer I’m after - it’s the conversation. If that were the goal, I could’ve just googled it myself. I’d much rather spend a few minutes speculating with you about what bird it might’ve been than have you immediately look up the right answer.

In most cases, when you feel tempted to take out your phone during a face-to-face interaction, you probably shouldn’t.

Wow I hated this. Upvoted.

I couldn't disagree more, so I guess that gets you an upvote.

Do you tell people this?

One definition of "friend" is: a person with which I like to spend time together.

Fair point. In the case of the person I thought of while writing this - no, I haven't explicitly told them this though they do know how I feel about their phone use.

Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments.

I totally agree with you - when I'm not actually asking somebody to tell me the right answer right away, I'll usually try to include "do you reckon" in the question to imply that. Like, "what bird do you reckon that was?" or "what do you reckon the tallest building is?". I usually find that results in a brief convo before somebody pulls out the phone to answer, which I'm not so opposed to -- after we've had a chat!

Shun the extravert. SHUN!

Seriously, though, I guess it depends on the question. If it's something nuanced and interesting to me that I have an opinion on, I'm likely to launch into an impromptu TED talk and monologue at you until I lose track of time. (God help you if you get me started on whether she exists or not.) If it's something simple like what species of bird that is, you'll get probably the minimum number of words necessary to convey an accurate answer (or "I don't know").

I hate conversation just for conversation's sake, though. There has to be a point to it. And the point can't just be "conversation." What you're talking about feels too much like "small talk" for my taste.

But also, it takes all kinds. You're not bad or invalid for liking small talk. Just... not necessarily my taste. Heh. Go find some other extraverts.

Also, I don't think your opinion is terribly unpopular at least in more western, individualist cultures.

Well, they are trying to be helpful.

I'm just too curious. Sometimes I even Google answers for questions on TV shows that I know will be answered 5 seconds later.

Just like with many forums or bulletin boards. You just get people responding to use the search function. Great, no need for anyone to ever post again.

How about somebody doing a AI search to a question and then just dumping it into chat?

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 2 points 7 hours ago

Believe it or not, straight to jail.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 11 hours ago

I'm talking of face-to-face discussions. In written form I don't care if they used AI assistant as long as the response accurately represents their view.

This is like the whole point in Lemmy for me. There are some advanced Linux people here that are knowledgeable, but most stuff I'm really interested in gets little to no interesting engagement and often results in negative toxic nonsense. This ain't tech support. Those that act like it are kids regardless of age. I expect everyone to act like they would with any stranger in public; just be cordial and nice to people. Look at this place like a grocery store checkout or DMV line in place where people casually talk and engage with each other. No sane person would start some smalltalk about the weather to have a person say, "hold up while I check the app for you." Same deal here, don't be a psycho because of digital anonymity. It is not harmless. Some people like me are disabled where this is all of my outside human contact and stupidity can have a real effect on me. It has a real effect on everyone, and always has. Children are just too stupid and have too shallow of a scope of self awareness to see and acknowledge their path of destruction. Real ethics come with age, and a person with real ethics is completely unchanged by anonymous interchange with anyone.
