Mangione's attorneys argued that allowing the defendant to use a laptop in jail is crucial for his ability to prepare for trial and participate in his own defense.

The judge determined Mangione may have access to a laptop prepared by the government seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An Amiga 386sx running Windows 3.11 and Office 97, and EarthLink dial up on a Hayes 2600 baud modem.

[–] PostProcess@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago

Oh, so marginally better performance than today's windows 11 machines! Don't make me salivate!

Maybe if he’s good, they’ll give him a US Robotics 9600.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When I was a lot younger I bought a US Robotics modem marked as 28.8k that actually connected at 33.6k, man I was so happy about a few k.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

I remember those. That few extra k would download those Pirate Bay files pronto quick for back then.

Maybe they will give him an acoustically coupled modem connection and make him screetch into it to connect

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, they're specifically disabling all network connectivity.

They can't keep him from beeping and booping and whirring into a handset, can they?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Where is he gonna get a handset?

Also, it's really hard to vocalize anything past 300 baud
