Who would want to fly to the States right now? When there is an increased chance of getting arrested for something, anything and thrown in jail.

How many Americans want to fly right now? They can't afford it.

imagine being a canadian citizen. you came to canada from a place like india, you got your citizenship, you're good. then you have to go to vegas for a trade show. would you go? as a brown guy?

[–] BreakerSwitch@lemm.ee 4 points 4 hours ago

This isn't even that big of a step from before. Went abroad with a white passing friend named Alejandro YEARS ago. When we came back, it was made clear that US customs had a quick line and a brown line, and my friend was in the latter. I was through in 10 minutes or less, wondering what happened to my friend, who was told he wasn't allowed to use his phone, for the better part of an hour

Definitely not ..... I'm 100% Indigenous Canadian and I was born and raised here ... but I'm a brown long haired Native guy and I would not go into the US right now.

If you're white you have a good chance of nothing happening ... but a higher chance than ever before of being arrested because of something border guards read on your mobile phone or social media posts.

You're absolutely right.

But even white women are getting detained for two weeks before being sent home. If it can be like that for them, how much worse can it be for everyone else. She managed to get access to another detainee's phone and got her story out too. How many others are detained right now that we'll never hear about...

i can't get a suntan before a sunburn, i grew up in the US south, i live in canada now, and there's no chance in hell you're getting me within eyeline of a US border agent.

edit - once you're at the border, your fate is pretty much at the whim of an idiot with authority.

As a white, cis, hetero, Christian male, I don't know even know if I'd be willing to go to the states! Maybe if it was for work, but even then I'd probably push back.

I see a possible scenario where I cross the border for a day trip (go to a show, a game, or even just dinner), and can't leave. I know it's not very likely, especially given my privileged, but if that situation came to pass, that would be hugely disruptive. Before 2025, I'd say that scenario is almost impossible, as Canadians could even get home after 9-11.

dude, when even fucking Germans are being sent to ICE camps, i don't know what else to expect.

[–] BigMikeInAustin@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

This article seems to be talking about domestic travel, so just within the US.

And, yeah, people losing their jobs won't be flying.

[–] n2burns@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

TBF, with the vast majority of Canadians living close to the border, many Canadian's cross the land border and then fly domestically within the US.

That's how markets should work, yes. When supply exceeds demand, prices should drop. We've had issues of this not happening because companies just hold the market hostage, but I'm hoping that the current situation causes all sellers and producers to be more market-reactive.

Another ripple from the tariff and DOGE stone Trump and Elmo tossed. Things are going to escalate...

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 8 points 10 hours ago

I don’t care how cheap the tickets get. Actually getting to the plane is enough of a deterrent to keep me away.

oh, you kid, but i don't think any of us has any idea of the fuckery about to happen.

probably garnishing of wages for student loans in default (despite previous administration providing more payment leniency) and then handing that money directly to Boeing execs to congratulate them on destroying Boeing

[–] toy_boat_toy_boat@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

boeing breaks my heart. so much lost potential.

..and it's going to be the garnish without the food stamps. manufactured riots come hell or high water. "marshall" law by mid-terms, mark my word.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

manufactured riots come hell or high water. “marshall” law by mid-terms, mark my word.

This conspiracy never makes sense to me.

If they want martial law they can just do it. Just lie and say there are riots, boom. There's no need to manufacture actual riots.

[–] toy_boat_toy_boat@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

first off, it isn't a conspiracy. it's an initiative.

secondly, they need fodder. a lie will only go so far when you're trying to get people to declare actual war on their own family. this isn't a mason-dixon line war.

lastly, you seem to have forgotten their motto: "cruelty is the point".

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

That's literally multiple people conspiring in secret to achieve an illegal goal.

And it's just not necessary.

We're more alienated and isolated than pretty much any time in history, they really could just tell their base "go arrest your neighbor for woke and await further orders" and they would do it. There's just no need for a conspiracy to manufacture riots, their loyalists will happily kill their neighbors. They can just do this whenever they want.

The cruelty is certainly the point, though, and that contradicts your own conspiracy theory. They aren't trying to manufacture riots per se, they just want to make people suffer. Even if there are no riots they get what they want.

[–] toy_boat_toy_boat@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

ugh. you make great points. i think we're both on the same track here. i argue that although they may not need the imperative to act, they could certainly benefit from the added "bluster", for lack of better terms.

edit - or "muster"?

[–] ryan213@lemmy.ca 3 points 12 hours ago

Lol yeah that's probably true

[–] Wazowski@lemmy.world -3 points 12 hours ago
