Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

The fact that he watched this on PBS while he's trying to defund PBS is just chefs-kiss

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 43 points 2 days ago

I imagine someone at PBS like "Put on fucking Dirty Harry or something manly or whatever and maybe they won't cut us as much"

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 52 points 2 days ago (1 children)

quick someone put on a documentary about communism on PBS, maybe we can achieve world socialism that way

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 40 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They could play star wars and his takeaway would be to build the death star

[–] BigBoyKarlLiebknecht@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

trump-moist Unlimited power, unlimited lasers, scary little British guys running around - and they still lose to a farm boy with a bowl cut and a dog. If I was running the Empire? Over in ten minutes. No Death Star explosions, no rebels flying into tiny holes - we seal the holes, okay? You get a guy, he seals it. Not hard. I know holes.

And Darth Vader - lot of people say I’m like Vader. Big presence. Deep voice. Very strong breathing. Incredible cape. We used to do capes in this country. We’re bringing them back. Space Force wears them first. Long black capes, red trim. You see that coming across the moon? You surrender. Immediately. We tested it at Mar-a-Lago - the waiters looked fantastic, folks.

I love the thought that they just sit him down to watch a movie when they want him out of the way then he comes out like "i saw this movie and...."

[–] CeliacMcCarthy@hexbear.net 51 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

it was PBS. I bet you ANYTHING some aide put on PBS to demonstrate the wasteful wokeness they're defunding and trump was entranced by clint

I think he's just old and watches PBS like old people do because modern media confuses him.

"I'm going to re-open this prison after watching a movie about three guys escaping said prison"

-A true brain-genius

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 51 points 2 days ago

Well that answers the question of "is this a cynical grift or just earnest stupidity?" I posed in the other thread.

Hellworld timeline also has funni moments thrown in here and there for your enjoyment.

Trump on the phone with the private prison company reopening the island "make the walls big, and high, very high, so Clint Eastwood can't escape." trump-anguish

What's the funniest thing PBS could air after this revelation?

[–] loaExMachina@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago (1 children)

A documentary about Mansa Abubakri, a 14th century Malian king said to have sailed west convinced there were lands there to discover; but who never returned. Immediately followed by Star Trek. With some luck it might convince him to leave earth.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Oh yeah this story is incredible. There is evidence that these expeditions made it to north America. iirc the word for spear in Taino is the same as the word was in Mali at the time, and there were spearheads found in Taino territory that had the same unique blend of three different metals that were used in Mali at the time. So the theory is that these Malian explorers made it to north America, traded with locals and eventually integrated into communities in North America long before colonizers showed up

Edit: here's a fun lecture on the topic

Haitian revolution documentary

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

French Revolution docu or Le Mis would be pretty funny.

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

Les Mie revolution is crushed by the state tho. Don't want to give him any more ideas.

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

I feel like it has to be some slop that caters to reactionary impulses still, but has a message he'd get obsessed with.

Maybe On Deadly Ground? Although that might just turn him eco-fascist instead of fascist.

Close enough, ~~welcome back~~ go back to hell Ronald Reagan

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

~~What does Ronald Reagan have to do with this?~~

Did some research, for those who don't know reagan tried to shove a bunch of cubans in there at one point

[–] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Reagan became very worried about glitches in the nuclear warning system after watching WarGames. He developed the SDI program, which was often nicknamed Star Wars.

Just saw your edit, that wasn't even the reference I was making, there's just a lot of layers and parallels between the two lmao

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Reagan’s slogan was “Let’s Make America Great Again” at one point.

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Which he stole from Thatcher, who came up with "Make Britain Great Again" because the pun actually works on Britain / Great Britain

Did he watch that terrible end of the world movie Greenland before the who Greenland idea?

[–] Jew@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Greenland is so bad but its a nice guilty pleasure. It does not convey the actual panic and shit show that would ensue in that situation. The soldiers are just like "oh well the world is ending... lets help all the rich people escape and totally function better than we do in much less critical situations". Gerard Butler also causes a cargo plane of (rich) people to blow up. Its so bad but its so ridiculous in the way a disaster slop movie should be.

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I tried to rewatch it with my partner the other night (hence why it was on my mind) and unfortunately the cargo plane that blows up is mostly full of desperate people. Gerard Butler tells all the 'selected' people to get off because he sees the fuel leaking and knows it's dangerous. They run off it and a bunch of desperate, zombie-coded masses run on before the gunfire ignites everything.

(yes I am wearing my 'genius at work' tee shirt, why do you ask?)

I don't mind the ridiculousness - I'm kind of an OG Roland Emmerich disaster movie defender - but I just found it very dull the second time around. We eventually gave up and rewatchrd Contagion instead which still more than holds up, even though it probably wasn't the best thing to watch when I have the flu.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

Nah the US foreign policy ghouls have been going on about Greenland for quite some time.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago

I fucking knew it lmao

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago

[–] HarryLime@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago
