How is [!BuyFromEU@europe.pub](/c/BuyFromEU@europe.pub) distinct from !buyeuropean@feddit.uk?

[–] tfm 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Same goals, different instances, mods, and admins.

This project aims to further strengthen the decentralization of the Fediverse.

I recommend subscribing to all BuyFromEU communities. This helps distribute power more evenly among moderators and administrators, reducing the risk of a few individuals having too much control. It also provides resilience against sudden outages, like what happened with feddit.de, ensuring continued accessibility and stability.

like what happened with feddit.de, ensuring continued accessibility and stability.

Lemmy.film went down, all of the content is still available at https://lemmy.world/c/moviesandtv@lemmy.film

[–] tfm 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Only if you also access it from lemmy.world or another instance that already cached it. Here on europe.pub for example, it's not accessible since it started after the server went down. Also different instances won't sync anymore.

[–] Blaze@feddit.nl 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

But that is also true whatever the number of parallel communities you have, if the instance shuts down, the hosted community will be in the same situation.

[–] tfm 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

That's why I propose to subscribe to similar communities on multiple instances. That makes the community as a whole more resilient.

At this very moment of we look at subscribers

People don't seem interested in subscribing in all the communities on a topic. One is usually enough, a second could be used for backup, but a third one?

[–] tfm 1 points 11 months ago

You are very welcome to subscribe only to the first and second.

Hey,

You can have a look at this thread: https://feddit.nl/post/30605675?scrollToComments=true

Didn't federate to SJW unfortunately

Hello,

Interesting initiative. Can you maybe tell a bit more about the admins:

  • there are two accounts, are those two different people or the same person using an alt?
  • how do you manage backups of the instance?
  • is that instance enrolled on https://lemmy-federate.com/ ?

That's a colleague. We are from Austria. :)

how do you manage backups of the instance?

Managed by Hetzner. The whole server is backed up.

is that instance enrolled on https://lemmy-federate.com/ ?

Haven't heard of it yet. Will check it out!

Doesn't seem enrolled as I had to manually fetch the comment above

Nice!

Would you consider adding more mods to existing communities like !BuyFromEU@europe.pub ? !buyeuropean@feddit.uk is already here, maybe that mod team can help the europe.pub community?

[–] tfm 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yes! Indeed I'm even actively searching for mods for the different communities. Building up the server is quite some work, that's why I haven't had time to search for them yet. But I'll definitely reach out to them. Thanks for the advice.

[–] Blaze@feddit.nl 1 points 11 months ago

Sounds good, thanks. There is a Matrix link on the pinned post of that community, that's probably the easiest way to reach out to them

An instance for all the country-themed communities right next to europe-themed is a nice vision. The former will probably grow slowly, but that's ok and you can make sure that the foundation with multiple admins, backups etc is resilient - like feddit.org after the drama with feddit.de.
Feddit.org only allows German&English language in order to keep it moderateable. If your country communities allow the respective languages (besides English for adressing interested 'outsiders') that's also a great vision, but I think you would better have native (or non-native) speakers as mods first.

Good luck!

[Edit: I meant competent speakers - they don't have to be native]

[–] tfm 2 points 11 months ago

Thanks! We appreciate all feedback. Given everything happening in the U.S., it's more important than ever to strengthen the fediverse. That's why we started this instance.

We definitely need more admins and moderators, but for now, things are still in the early stages and quite manageable.

If your country communities allow the respective languages (besides English for addressing interested ‘outsiders’)...

That’s our long-term vision! But as you mentioned, we’ll need native-speaking moderators to make that possible.

If you're interested in helping, feel free to reach out. :)
