Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Grab em by the face bones

I wonder if shapeshifters would struggle with profile shots since they mostly see themselves head-on.

Two hours refining the eye size, then turning around to find your nose is twice the length it should be and your cheekbones are concave, somehow.

They would certainly have a trifold mirror setup at a minimum, if not a mirror on the other side of the room. Character creation is the most crucial part of playing a role.

They could just form another eye on the end of their arm and hold it out in front

in ds9, the changelings can partially read minds so they would be able to adjust thier form very easily, also capable of changing thier mass and storing it in a pocket dimension, according to trek sources.

Some humans actually do this

[–] _g_be@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Plenty of humans desperately want this

God I would genuinely kill you be able to do this. I don't think I will ever be fully comfortable in my body and I doubt this would fix it but atleast I could just keep things changing.

God I would genuinely kill you be able to do this.

I know it's a typo, but it brings a level of personal aggression to the phrase that completely changes the meaning and I love it.

It's not just that "I would kill (somebody) for that", it's "I would kill you for that"

I hope you find a way to be more comfortable though!

[–] scintilla@lemm.ee 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yup totally a typo Lmao. Will leave it because it is funny though.

[–] riskable@programming.dev 9 points 1 week ago

Nah just own it. You only need to kill this one person to obtain your shapeshifter dreams!

Admit it, "I'd say sorry but I'd still pull the trigger." 😁

makeup is literally magic

Next step: choose a name

The shapeshifter lets out a deep sigh filled with dread and anxiety, knowing it’s going to take the whole day.

That presupposes though that a shapeshifter would need to see their own reflection to judge the look. If you have developed over millennia the ability to change your appearance at a molecular level, or physically speaking thereabouts, you probably have developed the ability to judge the look without having to look at it. You would be a rock who knew how to become Michelangelo's David.

I'd be amazed to hear that chameleons practice at a puddle before they try to blend in with the jungle. But I was sick a lot when they taught biology in school.

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Chameleons don't actually change color the way people think they do.

First off, the natural state of a chameleon is green, which blends in to the forest fairly well. Their color change is a mating tactic, and so favors bright and vibrant colors.

A chameleon changing colors isn't hiding, they're horny.

Or angry. Or scared, or well, any strong emotion. Basically a chameleon is a living mood ring.

Now, if you want true instant camouflage, that's an octopus. They can not only change colors, but their own surface texture. In their case, they get the info about what to look like from their numerous suckers alone their legs.

Wild Seed by Octavia Butler.

Shape shifter meets a body thief. If he inhabits her body, she will die and he'll never be able to get more children from her.

That's the first chapter.
