It recently occurred to me that OpenAI is using the MoviePass model.
- Operating at a huge loss.
- Get a bunch of investment
- Try to strong arm other companies into giving you a piece of the profits
- Fraud
Didn't work out so well for MoviePass.
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
It recently occurred to me that OpenAI is using the MoviePass model.
Didn't work out so well for MoviePass.
I bought 15 dollars of Moviepass long after it failed because I wondered if the marketing had value.
It did not.
There was zero value.
moviepass had some value eventhough it was over-inflated and gougy, LLM had no value to people.
What really tells it for the scam that it is would be to overlay that with this dipshit's personal wealth over the same period.
The line between the stock market/investors and degenerate gamblers is a fine one.
There's a line?
fools...it will be $0,000,000,000,000 in 5 years.
Reminds me so much of WeWork.
The profit's coming guys! Just another trillion, that's all we need!
Just another billion dollars, bro. Trust me bro.
Just one more lane.
At least wework had some bangin offices to work out of. Now they are overpriced, getting ratty and basically there's been no investment. Last time I worked out of one I think they charged like $60 CAD, that's a lot for a day in a shared desk.
well, it wasn't really their offices...
Shouldn't the profit be more like -$20B or something? Since they're actively losing money
In business, they don't like to talk about negative profits. Those are called losses.
The face of someone who wants to raise children with chat gpt.
That 2015 pic makes me understand why Peter Thiel was such a fan. He was kind of a cute twink actually.
Never have I been so regretful of learning English before reading this sentence.
altman met his husband during one of THIELS parties at the time, strange coincidence he started openai after it. thiel has ties to epstein too. I wonder how far gawker couldve gone if they wernt sued to the ground due to a vendetta by Thiel, they were definitely reporting on some of suspicious business pratices.
Thiel side piece was young male model who was defenestrated last year in florida, and largely buried by MSM and even on reddit it dint last a day, he definitely has a type.
Taking a page from the Russian oligarch playbook and tossing your mistress out of a window because they threaten to expose you is just one more cartoonishly evil thing Peter Thiel did.
How else do you expect thiel to fight the anti-christ? He's doing the hard work for all of us. Show some respect. \s
an interesting fun fact about altman, he met his husband at one of THIELs POOL parties, its not by accident around 2015.
What do you mean 'not by accident around 2015'? Is there something significant about 2015 or are you tying it to Trump's presidential run?
How come regulations haven't made them stop using that misleading name already ?
Regulations in the US? Surely you jest.
I have no idea
to congress with you! you'll fit right in!
USA is entirely based on lies. That's a big part of why "AI" is so popular.
Regulations haven't even stopped YouTube from sending fake AI medical ads to your family members.
The business model isn't to make money from a chat bot. The aim is to get to AGI and make money that way. Replacing workers with AI would be a gigantic money maker. Nearly all the big players bank on that.
If that is even possible is still unclear. A big bet with billions of dollars.
Uh... Replacing workers with AI would be the destruction of an economy which is literally the opposite of "money maker".
Economies work by the circulation of some form of currency (whatever form that might take). That means people need to spend. And people with low-paying jobs spend small amounts. People with no jobs spend nothing. (Also people who hoard wealth damage or even destroy economies as well. It's why you want inflationary currency, not static or deflationary.)
Using LLMs to get to AGI is like teaching a dog tricks and expecting that, if you work hard enough at it, the dog would get a law degree eventually
So if AGI is the key to replacing (most) workers, then AGI cannot exist without democratic socialism else we'll all starve.
Yes it can, it's just the wealthy don't care if we eat each other to survive. This is why EVERYONE should be oppose to AGI who isn't a billionaire or at least many times multimillionaire. It harms the common man, period.
Alternatively (or additionally), we should all support a (livavble) universal basic income funded from corporate profits. If an AI takes my job, make my (former) employer pay me anyway. If there is (almost) no work to be done by humans anymore, work should no longer be necessary to live.
True. Productivity would rise enormously.
But if we look at how rise in productivity no longer raises salaries, it's easy to guess what would happen if we'd get AGI: the profits go to the rich and the poor have to fight for themselves.
Would the 1% care if most of us loose everything? If you truly don't know the answer, here's a hint:
The super rich built luxurious bunkers instead of fighting climate change.
The only thing to get us to UBI is a massive revolution against the ultra rich and the politicians they bought.
We are already past the point where our resources are enough for everyone to have their basic needs met: Food, shelter and healthcare for everyone, and then some.
The reason we don't live in an utopia is that the system is rigged to make rich people richer and everyone else poorer. There is enough money for everyone, it's just unfairly distributed.
The hope that the rich will change their modus operandi, just because more people suffer is naïve.
No no no you've got it all wrong.
YOU'LL all starve. No problem! /S
Well, we know absolutely for certain that consciousness is just complex computation... right?
Because it would be very very silly to have bet all these billions of dollars on a convenient assumption.
LLM's are cool and all, but you can't use them for anything requiring real precision without allocating human work time to validate the output, unless you want to end up on the national news for producing something fraudulent.
And making it so their image generator can generate porn isn't going to change that.
I had to correct my boss this morning because they didn't read the AI output that told our client our services were worthless.
I removeded out Baidu's LLMbecile because Baidu has lost all capacity for searching in favour of the slop. It literally told me that Baidu was useless for search and recommended several of its competitors over Baidu.
Oopsie!
So sad that I totally believe that.
Can't wait for society to pick the tab on that bet ;)
Let's ask AI!
Shouldn't there be an actual number that The Altman has essentially burned, in front of all those zeros, and behind the negative symbol? Otherwise it seems to be saying that they are still almost liquid.
Those zeroes are off, right? Aren't we WELL into the billions in sunk costs?
For stupid reasons, negative profits aren't called negative profits. They're called losses. So a company that's losing money is showing 0 profit. (And a company that's making money is showing 0 loss.)
