It's actually still earth and the protagonist time travelled.

They travelled to the past when only the upper half of the statue was built.

So… in the novel… it IS actually a different planet and obviously the Statue of Liberty is not there.

You likely already know this but the statue in the movie is a convenient symbol for change over time which is relevant to the book. No spoilers.

Anyway… read the novel! It’s great.

I haven't read the book, but that makes this even funnier to me. Lol

Will add that to my list.

No! They did it! They blew it up!

And then the apes blew up their society too. How could this happen?

And then the birds took over and ruined their society.

And then the cows. And then...I don't know, is that a slug, maybe?

Noooo!

If you reach the bird people you're too far ahead.

Did you even watch the movie? They explain it right away!

Someone "blew it up" and the resulting explosion launched it into space.

[–] winety@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I've only watched the musical from the Simpsons.

[–] in4apenny@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

I hate every ape I see, from chimpan-A to chimpanzee.

No, this is a misunderstanding. This is just an unusual rock formation. It has nothing to do with the actual statue, that still stands on Earth.

[–] atomicorange@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, kinda like Mt Rushmore. Nature truly is remarkable.

GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!

I like how the only thing left of fucking New York City is made of iron and thin sheets of copper.

[–] FrChazzz@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It could be that they’re not in the former area of NYC, but the statue made its way to where they are. She’s hollow, yeah? Could she float? Could she have been taken back by the French at some point and then sent to some island like Tahiti?

Or is this movie a distant sequel to Ghostbusters 2?

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think you're trying too hard to defend a shitty movie. :)

[–] FrChazzz@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah just having fun. I like the theory down-thread that this is the Las Vegas Statue of Liberty.

Maybe George Lucas can buy the rights to the movie and change the ending to that giant sphere. GOD DAMN U2 ALL TO HELL!

A wizard did it.

Everyone forgets that the planet of apes is actually las vegas, if the camera where to go a little more to the left we would see a eiffel tower as well

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I think it's one of those artsy things they sometimes do to just confuse the viewer. In the book the eiffel tower is mentioned which makes everything more obvious.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Wait, that’s not Mega Maid?

[–] TechLich@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Oh shit, there goes the planet.

[–] thelefthandpath@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Is this a meme or is this merely a statement of fact about a movie along with a photo from that movie

[–] EaterOfLentils@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (7 children)

It was a different statue that looked the same. Just a coincidence. It's not that deep.
