I am pretty aware of what those taxes pay for. But it doesn’t change the fact that they do exist and they are high. Regardless - in my country, lots of people are always complaining about high taxes, so whenever I see someone mentioning them, it doesn’t imply that they’re American.

Honest question, why? I’m not saying the guy doesn’t sound like an astroturfing attempt, but not because of those 50%. When I look at my payslip, I see that the money I get is 50% of the money I cost my employer. And that doesn’t include VAT I pay on everything.

I agree. I just don’t like the attitude where internet is already declaring “victory” when so far not much has been done.

I understand that people got angry (partially because of “Canada + Europe vs USA” stuff; partially because people are already pissed at Big Tech). I also understand that inside of niche communities people are trying to do something and are getting hyped.

The problem is when people start extrapolating the view of “their” community to the whole world. “Everyone is ditching big tech! I read about that every day! (In a community populated by likeminded people)”. And suddenly there are “victorious” headlines and people get complacent. “Yeah Big Tech, you lost… That’s what you get for messing with us”.

I might be preaching to the choir, but we shouldn’t get complacent this time.

I wouldn’t say they lost. Not by a long shot. I understand the sentiment of “let’s get rid of them! Now’s the best time to do that”. But there’s still A LOT to do to make that happen.

But obviously - let’s contribute to that as much as possible.

They would be dumb if they didn’t do that. Did anyone expect something else?

Matrix is pretty much that already.

I wanted to mention Falke, but unfortunately those are even more expensive. Probably not a great choice for you, but maybe someone else will be interested, so I’ll mention it anyway. Their selection goes up to knee-high.

I’m not sure if I understand, but how would you access those reminder lists on Android devices? Is that possible somehow?

[–] Vlado@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

That could be a solution, but the thing is, I’m trying to slowly migrate all of the tools I’m using to something that’s independent on the platform. To be able to freely switch between iOS and Android whenever I want. (Preferrably to a degoogled Android). I’m also the person in our household who brings the new alternative, test it, make sure it will work crossplatform with other family members and so on…

As of now I’m still not ready to “jump the ship”, but I want to gather portfolio of tools to be able to do so at any time without significant discomfort (especially cnsidering other family members which are less open to experimentation)

This looks good. I’ll give it a try, thank you very much.

I’m looking for an application for managing of time-sensitive reminders. For less time critical things, I’m perfectly fine with having e-mail reminders. But for those “do at 18:00” kinds of reminders, I was always using the default iOS Reminders application.

Now I’m trying to reduce my dependency on Apple ecosystem, so I’m looking for something that:

  1. is multiplatform (iOS + Android, no desktop application needed)
  2. allows sharing of lists with other people (for example, grocery lists that I’m sharing with wife that we can both contribute to)

Nice bonus would be if it wasn’t behind a subscription, but rather a one-time payment. Is there something like that which is also European?

If you’re parsing 100k entries for an hour, I can tell you something is very wrong. Over my career I took care of lots of SAP systems (from Basis perspective) which ranged from small ERPs/EWMs with only few hundreds of GBs of data up to massive Business Warehouse systems with tens of terabytes.

And 100k entries really shouldn’t take that much, because that’s nothing. But of course it’s possible. SAP needs administration… You need to take care of the system, you need to take care of the underlying database. You need to be sure that you’re following proper recommendations to ensure good performance. And then there’s also a question what exactly was running slowly. SAP is usually heavily modified by custom coding and while the end user might not be aware which applications are “SAP standard” and which are custom, it makes a lot of difference. It’s easy for in-house developers to customize a program only for the program to work badly.

My point is - SAP can work perfectly fine as long as it’s maintained by experienced people and if the custom development is done properly. But companies love to cut corners and their employees don’t even know if the problematic report is created by SAP, or by some random developer with lack of experience. To the end user, it’s always SAP that’s bad.

I have long hair and I use similarly looking solid shampoo. What I do is, that I rub it in both hands and it foams quite quickly and heavilly. Then when I have both hands full of foamy soap, I rub it in hair and wash them similarly to how I would with a liquid shampoo. Maybe it sounds weird, but it’s pretty quick and effortless. But it’s very dependent on how good the soap foams. If you have a solid shampoo that doesn’t foam well, you would need to repeat this procedure multiple times and could be annoying.

What are you favorite European weather applications/webpages? At the moment I’m using https://www.yr.no/, but I don’t completely like the design of their application. I mostly don’t like the fact that each day is split into 4 segments instead of showing one line per day. It might sound like a minor thing (and it really is), but if someone knows other good alternatives please share your experiences.

I’m looking for a store where I could buy e-books which are usable by Kindle. I don’t use the e-reader that much, so I don’t want to buy a completely new device as the old one is perfectly fine. But I also want to have an option to use it from time to time (Amazon already got their money so it would be a waste to buy a new device)

My main problem (and please correct me if I’m wrong) is, that stores which I found mostly contain books in epub format (with DRM) which can’t be opened by the Kindle and which would need to be converted via 3rd party applications.

Are there some good stores with ease of use that’s similar to the Amazon’s one? Buy a book, send it to device, done. Or do I need to accept, that I will need to somehow convert books before using them?
