My friends and I have "gaming nights" that involve about 45 mins of gaming before we all watch a Ken Russell movie or something similarly offbeat.

Left wing politicians can't help but apply ideological purity tests to each other while the right is a large tent that all march to the same drum beat.

I liked John MacDonnel a lot but Corbyn's views on international affairs were a real turn off

NixOS sounds like ansible in OS form and that has never seemed appealing. Happy to hear why my impression is wrong though!

What makes someone's personality attractive (there are limits to what you can do about appearances) is self confidence and giving the impression that you have something interesting going on. Essentially you need to seem exciting to be around. That doesn't even mean like skydiving but just having hobbies you are passionate about.

Self-improvement might be one way of getting there but it's mainly a case of being comfortable in your own skin. I think this is why so many incels get confused about going to the gym not immediately making them desirable.

Lastly, you need to be genuinely interested in any potential partner as a person. People can sense when they are talking to someone with ulterior motives. This might be the biggest hurdle for hetro mysogynists who don't see women as people.

You need to check PorntonDB

I'm somewhat proud my generation is actively seeking out parody porn. Those videos tend to be higher budget and more sex positive (less gonzo misogyny).

Edit: well, should caveat that by saying relatively less misogynist

This is the monkey's paw Year of the Linux desktop. I know we're wankers but didn't need reminding!

Capcom's flagship fighter is one of the very best games you can get for Switch 2 at its launch, helped along by a faithful 60fps rendition of the game that includes online cross-play with all other formats. There are tweaks and cutbacks of course next to Series S and PS5, and further optimisations for its portable play - but on balance it's a success in holding a stable frame-rate in its 1v1 fighting - as Tom covers in this full tech review.

It would increase rental supply if people couldn't turn (much of) a profit by selling houses that are too big for their needs. I get your point though.

I always wondered why first homes were excluded from CGT because it creates perverse incentives in the property market where a home becomes an asset with better returns than any other investment

It's difficult because people in the higher tax brackets are already paying the lion's share of taxes in the UK and due to the laffer curve and expensive accountants it's hard to squeeze them. They'll say a load of BS about leaving but the real issue is the little things they can do is extra pension contributions and those sorts of things that let them avoid the next tax bracket. Fiscal drag is increasing the tax intake without the govt needing to enact any specific rises anyway.

Been thinking about this today. People already pay CGT on 2nd homes but given that housing is being used as an investment vehicle by virtually everyone in the UK, does it make sense to apply it to single homeowners too?

Would have to ignore the current govt's pledge to not raise taxes but with national debt at over 100% of GDP and us spending over 100 billion pounds a year in interest alone... not sure that is sustainable.

Thinking it through, house prices would fall since they would immediately be a less desirable commodity. Although they wouldn't plummet because houses still have intrinsic value and the supply of houses being sold would begin to dry up as people are dissuaded from selling.

The rental housing supply would increase in terms of properties since it would be more profitable to let them out than sell them. An increase in supply would reduce the cost of rent. It would need to come in with an increase in renter protection laws. Focusing on long term rented properties as family homes works well for other countries like Germany.

At the moment we've got a situation where people buy the most expensive house they can possibly afford because it has the best return of any investment by being exempt from CTG. In theory, people might buy more modest homes if they are buying and potentially could put more money into stocks/indexes which would stimulate the wider economy.

Anyway, this was more of a showerthought than anything else. What do you think?

Song has also aged badly but I wouldn't say it was ever good

Got rused by a Gerard Butler Butler-ganger at the weekend. Some pished dude who looked exactly like him came over and introduced himself as Gerard when I was having a fag at halftime at the rugby. Apparently I wasn't the only person who got rused...

How many times have we heard about the elusive 80 minute performance? That said I think Scotland can give France a scare before Les Bleus ultimately triumph

Couldn't find a way to share at a specific timestamp but if you go to 57:30 then Asterix and his fellow Gauls discover rugby from Les Bretons. Great lots of great rugby related gags!

Also found it interesting as a british person to hear the brits speak French with their accent. That's less rugby related though.

This game is unbelievable for an indie dev to create for free. Production values are through the roof. It plays like Zero Mission on the GBA and arguably does a better job of remaking the classic than the official 3DS Samus Returns game.

I'm playing on PC but there is also an Android APK if you search for it.

I find The National frequently embarassing as a Scottish person. Enjoying seeing them squirm here.
