The model we use is that the primary dividing factor, the original distinction being drawn was, "Should power be centralized or distributed?" with the right being the side that supported monarchy, nobility, tradition, and the left supporting empowerment, progress, equity. Obviously at the time they did not have a view of how this stances would develop over time, but it helps a lot in having a coherent understanding of the politics of yourself and others.
