Obligatory please never disassemble a microwave no matter how cool a “magnetron” sounds

Same advice as disassembling a very old CRT TV - leave it unplugged for 24 hours for all the capacitors to discharge if you're wanting to reuse the bits for any projects that you're doing. Otherwise, spicy voltages may still be present.

Just one minor quibble, leaving a old TV unplugged for 24 hours does not make it safe. Capacitors can hold a deadly charge for days, months, or even years.

You don't have dedicated high voltage discharge device, a screw driver taped to a big not conductive stick?

You'll give me traumatic flashbacks to our electricians checking the industrial overload settings by dropping a spanner onto the busbars. If the switchgear tripped out before the spanner melted, then the settings must be correct.

  • Many times the fix is simple, like a spuriously blown fuse. And the capacitor that holds charge after unplugged does not for long thanks to the discharging resistor, although best not rely on that and use a screwdriver to short it, even basic ones can handle 2000 volts but extending one with a stick is always possible.
