Must be a American thing.

Many European houses had probably lots of people dieing for centuries.

    Many German cities have a thing called "Stolpersteine" ("Tripping stones"):

    They're metal plaques incorporated into the cobblestones in front of houses commemorating jewish people who used to live there but either got murdered by the Nazis or had to flee.
