When it was instituted our Premier (Trudeau) was in British Columbia on the Holiday and rather than meet with the Indigenous leaders at a celebration observation, he went to his island home to chill out. To me this showed exactly how much Canada cared about Reconciliation.
It was a huge political blunder. The sort of mistake that doesn't make sense at all until you remember that he spent the day with his wife, and got divorced not long after. He was trying to save his marriage. He shouldn't've let his marriage get so precarious that he'd have to make a fuckup like that to try to save it, so I'm not excusing him, but I think it helps to understand it.
