Its ultimately a fear response. A misdirected, very complex fear response. 'Bad things can happen, bad people can do bad things, thus I must erect walls and pay guards and force farmers to toil and waste away to feed the guards, so that I can be safe in my castle.'

These LLMs, they can be used in sensible and broadly beneficial ways. They're not 'superintelligence', but they can be genuinely useful when used responsibly, with safeguards, by people well trained in their use, just like any other human technology.

Perhaps we actually need a 'technology' that punishes, dissuades, redirects or moderates this suicidal impluse latent in us, to create an unsustainable degree of control over others.

... radical egalitarian empathy, solidarity, a collective understanding that we are all ultimately clever apes that ditched the body hair for sweating, who are all much more similar than we are different...

... a flattened power hierarchy with participation from more equal positions and between actors with less singular power, a restructured society that uses the tools and resources we have to guarantee a basic level of material security for all...

... a mindset that understands that freeing the masses from want, securing for all the bottom rung or two of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, that that is the truest form of actual personal safety and security that any individual can possibly achieve, in this world of ours filled with us easily frightened and frenzied apes.
