I say it is ok to idle for 5mins max, during winter mornings. Oil doesn't run through the car that well in the mornings, when the temperature is -30Β°C.

  • When you need to get home from work at -30C (-22F), when you were expecting closer to -5C (23F) which is not an uncommon situation where I live, sometimes you don't care about increased wear on the engine (which usually heats up pretty quick). It's more about defrosting the windshield and warming the interior so that you don't have the seats sapping your body heat like a thermal vampire, leaving you shivering to the point that it's hard to drive.
