Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Don't forget that Daniel Radcliffe is a huge trans ally

[–] mig@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

I would consider him averaged sized.

I'd argue that trans lives matter more than JK Rowling's life. I'm bringing out the champagne when that bitch dies, and I don't even like alcohol.

The easiest of trolley problems

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 70 points 3 days ago (16 children)

I'm so bummed about Rowling. I loved those books so much growing up. Its such a shame the person who put such whimsy and magic in the world has gotta spew that hate. RIP Harry, a wizard no more

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Spew hate, fund hate, systemically implement hate and violence, politically platform and fund hate, and do horrific disgusting acts to individuals all the time.

Jkr is evil. Not a trash person, not a politically polarizing person, not just an outspoken person I disagree with. But an actual. Evil. Fucking. Human.

It's strange to me how they wrote a book about how muggles are oppressed, then they turn around and become Voldemort IRL

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (5 children)

From the very beginning she makes it clear which muggles are "good", and which are not, and thus are ok to do violence to. Same with other groups.

Yeah, Hagrid performs body modification surgery on an 11 year old boy because he stole a cake. This is presented by the story as just deserts.

The fact that she recently threatened to sue amnesty international and posted an upskirt picture of a (trans) woman (claiming it contained genital, and stating it's because this woman refused to debate her) would in most circumstances convince people to drop her. But for some reason we're still struggling to convince people that they can live without this series.

It was important to my childhood too, but I don't get to have nostalgia the hatemonger who wrote the books made them into something deeply associated with extreme bigotry against me, I wish that ruined it for everyone else too.

[–] StarryPhoenix97@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm not trans but people I care about are.

I may be the minority, certainly the sales numbers indicate it as such, but it's ruined for me.

My happy memories tied to Harry Potter are intrinsically also tied to my trans friends. Everytime she opens her mouth she assults those memories (and my friends' existence). I have no interest in fueling hate against people I know and love.

I'm sorry that more people don't feel the same.

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Jesus Christ she literally committed a sexual offence ahainst someone while claiming she wants to prevent sexual offences. FFS

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah and in case anyone is curious here's a source after all, I'm just some lady on the internet with a bias, you shouldn't trust me.

But yeah, it's really fucking bad. She should be arrested for it, but we all know she won't face any consequences. Hell with how the uk has been lately I wouldn't be surprised if the victim gets charged. No mercy for "evil trans predators" especially when they're mad at "brave citizen journalists who are simply documenting their sex"

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did you make those quotes up or are they genuine Daily Mail quotes? Cos the latter would NOT surprise me

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I made them up, fully aware they may be taken out of context and used against me lol

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 2 points 20 hours ago

Sad thing is they genuinely could have been real...

[–] DrPop@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Disgusting, I plan to make sure she gets none of my money. She hasn't really since the last main series movie came out. I just wish people would get over their nostalgia and see how this woman is using the money gained from tgeir love to fuel hate. I have never eaten ChicFilA and don't plan to for instance. I do my best to not support problematic shit when I can. Buy bootleg merch if you want the stuff and pirate the movies and games.

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

People hate trans people so much that if they had any they'd throw any ethics they had out the window to get rid of them.

Most everything matters more than Harry Potter.

And few things matter less than the JK herself.

[–] kamenlady@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And few things matter less than the JK herself.

I agree, but she's rich and is putting her money into projects that are actively hurting people.

[–] DaedalousIlios@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

Pretty sure what they mean is that JKR is a worthless human being because she's chosen to do those things.

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Just pirate it ffs, separate art from artist and simply don't give her any money

[–] msage@programming.dev 9 points 3 days ago

Attention sometimes matters more than your money. And todays world is all about attention.

We will all do better to ignore such artists altogether.

[–] SourDragon@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

i don't want anyone to feel conflicted because they like harry potter and hate jowling kowling rowling. i want them to feel peace with not watching or reading harry potter because it's a terribly written story by a talentless hack who got extremely lucky. literally everything about it is awful, the characters, the plots, the conclusions...

please get over your nostalgia. you're not a child anymore, just think about how much you projected your own good will into a story full of bigotry and vile.

I wish that franchise never existed.

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Everything matters more than Harry Potter. Harry Potter is fantasy slop, it is insanely unoriginal in so many ways. There's better stuff out there to read and support. I don't understand why people go gaga for this shit.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 18 points 3 days ago (7 children)

That's because they're books for children. Has everyone forgotten this?

[–] laz@pawb.social 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The average Harry Potter fan is still nostalgic for their lost childhood innocence I guess.

The first 2-3 books maybe, but Joanne really tried to push for a more mature tone, with none of the writing skills to back it up. Slavery, creatures that devour your soul, date rape, torture to the point of insanity, political corruption, the rise of fascism, grief, child soldiers, analogies about aid-riddled homosexuals targeting children. None of these are topics for a children’s book, let alone one written by a bigoted idiot.

Things are allowed to be kind of bad and people are allowed to like them anyway.

Things are not allowed to be bigoted, of course.
