The exact moment when Isaac Newton invented the LGBTQ+

[–] gooballer@lemmy.today -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

invented? so LGBTQ+ just didn't exist before Isaac Newton. that sounds prety homophophic to me.

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

what would they use as their flag? :/

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 53 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Newton's work in optics → refraction and better lenses → the microscope →germ theory →vaccines.

Well, he couldn't have known that, but fascinating that he was inadvertently helping to solve disease. Just a few centuries ahead of being useful.

This is what you can expect from a mathematician. Always ahead of the curve.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And calculating the area beneath it.

[–] gooballer@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

And the slope within it

Damn, should beat meat to it.

[–] gooballer@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Damn, should beat meat to it.

🤨so what are you beating meat to

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

Looks like a typical pandemic project to me.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 24 points 2 weeks ago

As if you didn't try new hobbies during lockdown!

[–] Airfried@piefed.social 24 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What else should he have done? People of course isolate during a pandemic and this isolation made some people very productive. We've seen it during the covid pandemic as well.

[–] Artisian@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wish we'd do this to academics more often. Give them enough to live on, no responsibilities, and beat anyone who tries to socialize with them with a big stick.

[–] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

IMO, we need that outside of academia too.

Isaac Newton discovers Led Zeppelin circa 1666

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He was into Pink Floyd before they were cool (or were born).

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 week ago

Back then they were called Sepia Floyd

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We made sourdough. Newton defined the foundations of math and science.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago

First read as Sourdough Newton. Thought maybe that was like a fig newton you made during lockdown.

Or maybe sounds like a classic rock cover band singer who would have opened for Meatloaf in the 1980s.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago

So prisms anc color theory were lockdown discoveries. Gotcha

[–] moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago

why didn't he just invent antibiotics instead, was he stupid?

I thought so too so I checked. The plague came in many waves (famously the black death was in the 1300s which may be why we were confused) but there was a major plague outbreak in 1665-1666 which is when Newton was doing his work on optics.

[–] adam_y@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yep we had Optics, the plague and the great fire of London in one golden year.

Interesting fact that the fire probably helped curtail the spread of the plague and led to more sanitary conditions in London in general.

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 week ago

Were all the anti-vaxxers also fire-deniers?

[–] HeavenlySpoon@ttrpg.network 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If I’m not mistaken, he also calculated pi by hand (to several decimal places) during lockdown. So it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for ol’ Isaac.

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

He should have just used a TI-86.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

Thomas Müntzer fanboy.

[–] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Gay is stored in the prism.

[–] Engywuck@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

They come out due to UV light. It is know as the photoeclectic effect.
