I always felt closer to the EU (well probably more when UK was a member) as a Canadian. Probably lots of my household words while growing up were British (for example thong, foot beachwear vs underwear)than say American English.

I hope we get a closer tie with them regardless, we are a relatively small country by gdp and population compared to many and I don't want to deal with Nazis like it's the 1940s. I played enough stealth games, not my thing. But damn right I'll do what I can for my country even at this age, so best I can hope for is being a part of the resistance I assume but hope it doesn't come to that.

That's Aussie, thong means the underwear in Britain

Huh neat, cause we always called them thongs growing up and grandparents were not from there as far as I knew. I thought that was a US thing (for underwear), and thong was a more British and Aussie thing. Good to know if I travel to either of those places. Half of the comment was from an Aussie comedian which I thought was closer to British terms. Perhaps I just found an outlier or I am completely incorrect in my thinking, both possible heh.

Because most of Canada is immigrants from Europe and we don't force people to drop their ethnic heritage to a melting pot shit culture like the USA.

Cool. We should absolutely disentangle the US-Canadian nonsense.

Canada borders Denmark and France so it should be more than an associate status. The further from the sinking ship that is america the better, lest we get pulled down in their wake.

What do you mean by "Canada borders Denmark and France"?

There is an island in the north east part of Canada whose ownership was disputed by Denmark. Over the last few decades there has been "friendly" invasions where Canada took down Denmark's flag and replaced it with their own. Then Denmark would do the same thing to Canada. This went back and forth over time, usually involving leaving some whiskey for the next changeover. It is now a shared island between them. In the south east part of Canada there is a little island mixed in with all the other eastern Canadian islands that belongs to France. This is from my memory, the internet knows the specifics for sure.

St. Pierre and Miquelon are the French islands just off the coast of Newfoundland. There is a short ferry ride between them. Complicated history, but basically the French got to keep them after ceding French Canada to Britain (though control swapped back and forth a bit). They territory is EU-ish: non-Schengen, but they do use the Euro and residents have EU citizenship.

If Canada would join the EEA, that would certainly make my job-hunting much easier. Even if it increased the pool, the country I'm targeting general requires B2 proficiency in their language + English which should buy some time.

I honestly never thought I would be so bothered by whats going on with Canada, but it really saddens me. I honestly always felt like Canada was a friendlier extension of the US in many ways. How in the fuck can you alienate such an important strategic and cultural ally? I just hope that Canadians realize the MAJORITY of Americans value our relationship...

I don't think I would be on board with Canada in EU even as an associate. Perhaps one of the looser agreements. There're a great many pros and cons, but also too many unknowns and the risk of leaking American influence.

The UK is just as big of a US influence risk to the EU and there's talks of allowing them back in.

Canada basically borders the EU, I don't see why not. The more the merrier. We will build our own NATO, with blackjack and hookers.

Very good point and something to keep in mind at all times.

However, all EU institutions are already filled with American assets, so American influence isn't really a risk anymore.

That's what Russian propaganda and Russia's parties in the EU keep telling us and US supported parties too (surprise: those are the same parties). Makes you wonder why they are so desparate to destroy the EU if they control it already.

Personally I find it incredibly likely purely based on the EU's decision making. If EU institutions aren't controlled largely by American assets... why would they keep making decisions that benefit the US and hurt the EU?

At least several high-profile EU officials also have very close familial ties to American officials or businessmen.

They're either foreign agents, or grossly incompetent. Not all, of course, but a good number.

As for Russia, I'd say it's way too weak to have anywhere close to that much influence over a richer, more powerful, more populous territory. I'm sure it does have some, but nowhere near that level.

There is plenty of high profile legislation in the EU, the US absolutely hates, if the US had had its say there would be no Gallileo, at all, there will be no Iris2, etc. The US also hates many regulatory decisions by the EU and it hates most rulings by the EU judicative.

None of those things should be the case if the EU were as dominated by the US as you say.

What is of course correct is that the US does have influence, so does China and other major blocks.

I dare to say that EU's growing independence from the US is part of the hostile approach the US has walked for the past decade or so.

It didn't start with Trump and didn't stop under Biden.

I remember when they merely used to be hangarounds. Then they became prospects.

Look at them now. Associate members.

We have great hopes for this our newest addition to the chapter.
