My truck is >20 years old but it won't last forever. Is removing the car's cell antenna a viable solution?
post
I have a 1999 z3 and a 2012 f150 with the satellite disabled. The only thing tracking me is my fucking phone.
Family car is a 2014. Dad asked the other day "How would you feel if we got a hybrid?"
My reply "As long as it doesn't have a full-time network connection, I'm fine with it"
Next time, I'll be adding "No internal cameras, no infotainment system, and why buy an old hybrid instead of an old gas car?"
why buy an old hybrid instead of an old gas car?
Better fuel economy and better driving characteristics? More power?
I was thinking with a used hybrid the batteries could have very reduced capacity.
I have a 2013 Kia optima hybrid that gets 550+ miles per tank; in comparison my kia Sportage gets >300. I filled that up weekly because I couldn't go 2 weeks without out going empty. My hybrid I've had for a year has had less than two handfuls of fillups; basically I go over a month without filling the tank (they're similar size tanks)
The mpg I average is pretty low because my commute is short and on surface streets so it's roughly 35mpg but on longer trips it goes above 40mpg. The Sportage was rated for 21/28 but it hardly ever got that high
Even if it has reduced capacity due to age, like the other comment said, it is still vastly more efficient
It will still get much better mpg even with lower quality batteries. Also for the record I'm driving a 13 year old electric car and while it only had a 70 mile range at release, I still generally get about 50 to 60 miles on a charge.
Mine isn’t. I’d rather cut my own toes off than pay to drive a modern car
I’ve got an ‘08 myself and I’m in the same boat. Gonna keep it at this vintage or older when I need a new one but I’ll drive it till it dies.
This is why I purchased a Suzuki Jimny.
- really stupid ADAS with no connectivity.
- big profile tyres so I can handle the potholes.
- goes anywhere so when the revolution comes I can go bush and avoid the conflict.
I used to own a Sumarai, and loved that car. I didn’t realize the Jimny was almost the same thing but better looking and more of a hard top. I wished I lived outside the US.
The new ones have all the compromises of an off road vehicle, and are underpowered (like most modern ICE vehicles).
They are still amazing fun to drive, although the Range Anxiety is Real. Driving over 110kmh on some roads is dangerous, especially with crosswinds.
Despite it’s light weight, it is still a bit of a guzzler, I’m Averaging 9-10l/100km in daily and weekend use, which means I can only travel about 300-400km without having to fill up again: further if I drive sedately.
I have friends with long-range 80l fuel tanks and there is also a 30l sub-tank available. It is technically possible to install them both at the same time, but that is a lot of extra weight and that doesn’t leave much room for mufflers.
I know people who only drive on slow 90km/h roads and they often get 6-7l/100km.
My car was the last year before the model got a new spy stereo. I'm sure it has some in it, but nothing compared to later years and higher trims. I will hang onto it until it starts shooting engine pieces out the exhaust.
