when I was in middle school I racked up over half a YEAR playtime in Minecraft and gave myself carpel tunnel. I only played Minecraft 1.8.9 which was at least 10 versions out of date by that point. I never even made anything I just played on Hypixel.

I did get full superior dragon armor in Hypixel Skyblock by spotting that you could buy a fish for 2 coins but sell it for like 20 coins if you craft it into bait because people are lazy. So I bought and sold millions of fish 2,500 at a time.
I later found that you could just craft dragon armor using shards and sell them on the auction house for about 100k profit and made BANK before other people caught on.

I loved finding those little market loopholes. Sad that nerds eventually caught on and made websites to automate it, and that the game went pay to win. Those were some good times though.

also hot take but dwarvern mines ruined the game. It's "SKYblock" not "infinite land block"

Man, all y'all playing games people have heard of. Filthy casuals with your "Warframe", "Runescape", "Minecraft", "TF2" and "Diablo".

I, a true connoisseur, personally spent my childhood sinking over 2000 hours into Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (not to be confused with the far more popular and lauded Final Fantasy Tactics). It's the only Final Fantasy game I know of that has never been rereleased. The other game of my childhood was over 200 hours in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. The first video game I can remember playing was Final Fantasy II.

I llke how you make fun of people for liking mainstream games, and then proceed to list off some of the most mainstream games ever that you so happen to like.

God I loved Tactics Advance so much. You know there was a DS sequel? Looks badass, I'm concerned I'll just ruin the magic memories.

Yeah, but even I thought that the sequel didn't look good in terms of crunchiness. I liked how there were thousands of different options for team load out and equipment and abilities in the original, but it seemed like they streamlined it for FFTA2. Also, it seemed like it retconned some of the back story of the original, which made me not want to play it.

I never gave it a chance, then.

Gonna toss this in here cause it is a little known game that I have heard described as a glue trap for autism (and I am a stuck rat with 3000 hours).

    Siralim Ultimate

If you like creature collectors and putting together broken builds with an insane number of moving parts a la magic the gathering you will probably enjoy it.

I think you would really thrive in EVE Online, if you're looking for a different sandbox to pull off this kind of crap in. Your autist and autist-tolerant community awaits.

The game is so complex and nuanced that the learning curve is nigh impossible to overcome by yourself but it also means that the game is full of fun little interactions and opportunities for people to discover and exploit.

A lot of early game poverty, sprawling decision fatigue, and impenetrable mechanical complexity can be mitigated by knowing people, so if you do give it a try, DM me and I can infodump all about my special interest.

As someone who's currently winning the game at the moment, I will note for those interested but unfamiliar that "winning the game" is what Eve players call taking a break. At this point, it's more fun as a game to read about. But getting to that point was an adventure for sure, and I still hang in my old corp's spaces.

Most of the game is boring, but the fun parts absolutely gave me the highest adrenaline highs of any game by far.

I've played Wazhack so much. Is it pretty? Not really. Does it have bugs? Yes. Have I played a ton on the website, bought the website version, bought it so long ago was sent a steam code, and now have way too many hours on the steam version. I love it. I go back to it.

I played Rappelz. I played Rappelz off and on through 2014. (US servers, the Korean ones were way too hardcore for me)

Elite: Dangerous. 1300 hours and counting.

Frontier are an absolute shitcake of a company, and David Braben is a greedy motherfucker. The game is a mile wide and an inch deep, with some fucknasty game mechanics and grinds.

Despite all that and more, nothing I've played so far in my 44 years on this earth is quite as fucking cool an experience. It works well with all my simrig peripherals including the TrackIR, which helps the experience a lot I will admit. But still, it has it's moments.

I played nothing else for two years. I wanted so hard to find some depth, but all they gave us was lazy expansions, and chaotic updates, and almost no followup on anything once it was implemented. Still the best space sim i ever played.

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos pulls a close 2nd place for it's genuine Newtonian physics at sub-light speeds.

Edit: Sniper PDCs and ranging everyone out, true space combat.

not every weird thing is because autism.

Of course not, but "restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities" is one of the key traits of autism observed by non-autistic folks and one of the major criteria/requirements for diagnosis, and playing a specific video game over and over can certainly line up with part of that

Does this make someone autistic, no, but if that person's seeing this, pretty heavy social communication differences with others, inflexibility with routine, nonverbal communication differences, atypical sensory sensitivity, and all this has been since an early age, they should probably start considering the possibility

    • Not every weird interest is autism
    • Not every habit that disrupts your productivity is ADHD
    • Wanting things to be tidy / clean / organized is not always OCD

In 2000, mental orders were under discussed. In 2015+, people are obsessed with labeling themselves as some sorta broken.

Statistically most of you guys are just slightly nerdy, lazy, and picky. Not autistic / adhd / OCD.

That's like going to a UFC match and telling the audience that statistically 51% of them are female. Might be true on a global scale, but where you collect your sample matters.

I bet the demographic on lemmy skew much higher for neurodivergent people than in general population (kind of like how UFC fans skew more male than in general population), and even more so on lemmy.blahaj.zone (you know, because of the statistics on blahajs selected demographic).

It's almost like autism is a set of traits that everyone has to a small degree they are simply stronger and highly amplified in people with autism to the point of it greatly affecting their daily lives.

Everyone can spend too much time on a video game, autistic people who have a special interest in video games are way more likely to spend insane hours on the the games they fixate on.
