TSA is removing chairs from ‌checkpoints, said the American Federation of Government Employees TSA Council 100, which represents workers and criticized the move as a “disregard for workers' rights and safety" and added the chairs "serve as basic ergonomic and safety support for officers that stand and walk on hard surfaces all day."

TSA confirmed the decision, saying: "This welcome change reinforces both our security posture and our commitment to hospitality by having these officers on their feet and alert. All officers must meet fitness for duty requirements to be capable of performing their vital national security function."

This kind of shit is how you can tell a boomer is running it. Stupid outdated cruel decisions. I hate TSA as an institution, but a lot of people employed there are just trying to get by, same as the rest of us.

TSA Agents are miserable enough as is. Let's make their feet hurt too, that'll improve the experience for everyone

It is unprofessional for them to stand on two feet at the same time. Instead they should have to stand on one foot at all times. They should be forced to wear sensors in their shoes and be penalized if they spend more than 30 seconds in an 8 hour day with both feet on the ground. I think this would promote readiness and show a more professional appearance.

Grocery clerks aren’t allowed to sit down in the US, either. It’s stupid.

I wish I could somehow convey to whoever is collecting data on me that this is a thing I like.

Like there's all these entities trying to collect data on me to figure out how to sell me stuff and I want them to know the fact that Aldi lets cashiers sit down positively influences my decision to shop there. If other grocery stores adopted this I would prefer them over stores that do not.

That’s not mandated by the government though.

Grocery executives believe that US consumers see sitting as lazy and standing as diligently working. Whether or not a sufficient percentage of consumers actually hold the belief should be irrelevant, but it’s a cultural norm (even though it’s objectively worse). The government is functioning as an employer in this case, and is somewhat equivalently failing its employees for the sake of perception by the public. The more important government failing to be angry about is that sitting isn’t protected by OSHA, and the bigger societal failing is that capitalism has suppressed unions to the point that they can’t effectively even win this as a reasonable concession.

The people who do the ID checks literally have no reason to stand. They're sitting on the other side of a kiosk and checking your ID. All the physical security checks are done by other people after that

In the US, the cruelty often found in menial jobs seems to be part of the point.

Removing every bit of humanity, one step at a time. The us is a dark place and it’s getting darker every day.

They already have chairs, they are going to take them away and probably throw them in a dumpster

Nah, it's the government. They'll pay for a warehouse to store them and a security company to guard the warehouse.

"Nine times out of ten it's an electric razor, but every once in a while... it's a dildo. Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo. We have to use the indefinite article, 'a dildo', never... your dildo."

As someone with minor foot issues that make standing for any length of time painful, I can’t wait for TSA to be understaffed.
