Lemmy's default sort is "Active", which means that the most active threads will stay at the top of the frontpage, which can make the same few threads stay for ages. It does give the impression that lemmy is more active though.

I like to go back to old posts so I can read the new comments on them.

Sort by new and push good content up

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 20 points 4 days ago

I do that as well.

[–] miss_demeanour@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is the way.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Make sure you push down Monk and his army of side characters too.

[–] lordnikon@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I love Adrian Monk, he is my favorite TV detective.

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 4 points 4 days ago

Top - Past 6 Hours is what I prefer. Keeps it fresh, but filters out a little of the spam

[–] the_kung_fu_emu@lemmy.world 55 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I'm a fan of "Top six hour" it refreshes often enough to see intersting tidbits throughout the day but not so much that I'm checking every twenty minutes!

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Sometimes it's been a while since I last checked the feed and I go for Top 12 hours

[–] troybot@midwest.social 5 points 4 days ago

Top comment was sponsored by Top Six Hour Gang

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I do "top day" because its not healthy to check this shit more than once per day.

[–] the_kung_fu_emu@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Oh lord don't I know it!

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Just tried that and scrolled through seen posts until it ended. I expected it to start off with hottest of the last 6 hours, but is it only the last 6 hours? I guess I don't have enough communities

[–] Not_mikey@slrpnk.net 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah, it's the top posts that were posted in the last six hours. Unless you have a pretty wide sub list it's usually better if you do it for everything/all, eg. https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/?dataType=Post&listingType=All&sort=TopSixHour . Otherwise top 12 hour or top day is usually good

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Thanks. I'll take it as a jump off to diversify again. I stuck to joined communities because my feed was getting steamrolled by dumb, socially adverse, or majorly irrelevant communities. My original communities probably also died off, too.

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 4 days ago

Could also try sorting by top 6 hour.

[–] Madbrad200@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Also use the hide read posts setting

[–] exasperation@lemm.ee 4 points 3 days ago

Depends on how you want to use Lemmy. When using it as a link aggregator, you'd probably want to hide the stuff you've already clicked on. But as a discussion forum, it doesn't hurt to go back to threads you've already seen to see what new comments have been made since.

[–] Lumiluz@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] Madbrad200@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They do not. Are you using Sync for Lemmy? It's broken and doesn't hide properly

[–] Lumiluz@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Voyager. I've had the issue since always

[–] Madbrad200@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Might be worth bringing it up in the voyager community. That definitely shouldn't be the case.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Active is the worst one I have no idea why it's the default.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 3 points 3 days ago

It gives the illusion of more people being on lemmy.

[–] AbnormalHumanBeing@lemmy.abnormalbeings.space 13 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Personally, I like "Scaled" and "Hot" the most, but I also check "New" to discover communities that may otherwise get lost (and, to ban spam/bot/troll accounts along the way as well) - and lastly, I also have a look at "Top/Day" at least once a day, to see what's the "talk of the town".

It definitely feels like we had some growth in proper, organic activity. Just a few months ago, it definitely felt like "Top/12hrs" was the best one for the amount of content that was being posted. But for a while now, "Hot" and "Scaled" feel much better than that one.

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Scaled gives me some super niche posts with two or three upvotes sandwiched between the same posts I see when I sort by active, which is not always bad but not necessarily what I want either. If I feel like I need content I go for new or top 6/12/24 hr.

[–] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.one 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

This is the way, every now and then mix in top 1 hour

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 4 days ago

i usually do hot / subscribed and if I run dry, i do all

and if that runs dry, i do scales... sometimes I will try other stuff but that's usually good enough

[–] AlexisFR@jlai.lu 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

But then you'll be flooded by 0 comments posts.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Maybe if you sort by new. Try sorting by "new comments"

[–] AlexisFR@jlai.lu 2 points 3 days ago

Sorting by hot also does that. It's just broken.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

New Comments is the best way to sort if you want to actually talk.

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago
[–] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Also if you don't want to manually switch it all the time, go into your account settings and change the sort type to whatever you prefer. Similar should apply in apps, with a bonus: some apps will let you change default comment sort setting as well.

[–] emb@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

But doctor…I am Pagliacci.

[–] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

top last time i checked lemmy

[–] BagOfHeavyStones@lemm.ee 5 points 4 days ago

And if you get sick of seeing the same post multiple times on the page, give PieFed a go. It stacks the multiple comments under the one item instead.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I like Scaled when I want exposure to things outside my bubble but not brave enough for New

There's nothing wrong with leaving New to the professionals.

The shit we've seen...

[–] solrize@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Sort by new.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

It indeed is often the same 5 - 8 posts because everything else gets hidden by politics word filters.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 2 points 4 days ago

Or, if on mbin, do that in reverse (at least in my case; hot stays stagnant but active is always changing).

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Insert the Hank Hill meme:

"If those kids could sort by hot they would be very upset, right now."
