So basically they gave a bunch of nonprofits with fewer than 300 employees less than ten weeks notice that their longstanding Microsoft 365 subscriptions would be unexpectedly cancelled by Microsoft. So presumably the first time many of them found out about it would have been when their software suddenly stopped working. By the time they called Microsoft to find out what happened their data was already deleted.

This is what you get for moving everything to the cloud.

these organizations likely don't have the budget for dedicated IT staff either. so they're even more reliant on stuff like their office and cloud 'just working'.

for orgs that are eligible, see https://www.techsoup.org/ for an alternate source for free or low-cost software, including microsoft subs.

There was a time when I didn't exactly "trust" big tech corporations, but I did expect that their business plan would revolve around providing the service they said they would that people have come to rely on, oh how naive I was.

The problem is definitely your ridiculous assumptions of good faith and definitely NOT the societal structures we have ceded our power to, BUDDY! Shame on you! You bring dishonor and embarassment to the Ferengi Empire!!

Say it with me: "The cloud is not a backup solution!"

Well, a cloud copy can be part of your backup solution.

But if the cloud copy is your only copy, then it's not a backup at all.

(Personally, MEGA is the cloud-based off-site component of my backup strategy, chosen because it's affordable and end-to-end encrypted, so I know they can't steal all my shit for AI training.)

You were just renting your data and your work. Renting it to the cloud.

...also, good luck buying cheap storage media now!

I literally switched to Linux because Microsoft kept moving all my files to one drive after every stupid update. They aren't there for a reason and one drive is disabled for a reason. Please stop enabling it and moving it back!

But to do that to non profits, that's just disgusting. The devil himself is ashamed of you Microsoft.

I am really curious what you are all doing with your pcs that things keep re-enabling by themselve.
When I turn off onedrive it stays off. Same for other settings. And I didnt even do anything special to it.
Windows might pester me with new stuff but besides that, nothing...

The only saving grace for this PC is that I am not in the mood to do an inplace replacement. But my next full hardware refresh will be a Linux box.
    Probably Debian with KDE Plasma.

"The Cloud" is just someone else's computer.

When you give used control of your data, you deserve what you get.
