I just saw a video of an AI executive saying that people will connect their brains to the cloud so they can have 1,000 times more thoughts.

Neurotypical people. Please listen to me. I promise you, with all the ADHD in my body-

You really do not want 1,000 more thoughts.

You may think you do, but you extremely do not.

I know this isn't true for the same reason anyone who's demanded my "undivided attention" and been unlucky enough for me to oblige knows.

Kids, don't let billionaires stick wires in your brain. Trust me on this one.

Didn't you have ads in the 20th century?

Well, sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games, and on buses, and milk cartons, and T-shirts, and bananas, and written on the sky... But not in dreams.

Skipping the AI bullshit... having 1000x thoughts sucks because you can't act on them. You can't move or type 1000x times faster to do 1000x things. If brain-computer interface would let you not only think 1000x faster but also do things faster it would be... it might not be terrible.

Maybe you can use some of those thousands of thoughts to mind- control a bunch of robots. Then you could accomplish an equivalent amount of things physically as if you could move 1000x faster.

Also typing should not be an issue if you have your brain hardwired to the spicy autocorrect demon.

Your physical body would probably burn out at that speed. Perhaps some substantial speed increases would be in order? 1.5x? 2x? Imagine the friction of going 1000x; in your joints, in your organs; the blood flow, the stress on your heart.

We tried this shit in the 80s with cocaine. Tech bros all just want virtual cocaine.

If I could just get something to record all the ideas that come up while I'm in the middle of something and the juices are flowing that would be great. Maybe check my parts inventory to see I have all the stuff I'd need to act on it or look up reference information while it's at it. That'd be way better than my current strategy of jotting down a quick note and not looking at it again until I'm no longer in the zone and don't feel like doing anything.

Not putting a chip in my head though, it'd have to be some kind of self hosted thing I could talk to.

It's also a bit of a zero sum thing. My brain might have 1000x the normal amount of thought, but they're not as well thought out, nor as complex, and it burns through energy to do it.

Your energy reserves would deplete in three minutes, and then you're nursing a headache or feeling awful the rest of the day.

If it's so good, why don't they get those implants for themselves?

1000 times more thoughts seems less like ADHD and more like a seizure.

They’re not all at once. It’s like a thought streaming service piped to your brain that is near impossible to shut off or focus well.

For real though. That's exactly how I feel when someone claims that their AI helps because it comes up with ideas for them. Like what sort of dull and unimaginative existence does someone who isn't bombarded by ideas 24/7 have?! Next you tell me that you don't constantly fuck up recipes because you got bored and deviated from the instructions for no real reason smh

Under no circumstances do you want the inability to shut your brain off. Trust me, as an autistic person. It's a terrible double edged sword that is not worth it a fair bit of the time.

  • [–] 7 points 2 days ago

Autistic+ADHD+DID here to tell you that no… No you do NOT want 1000+ thoughts all at once, it’s literally the worst idea imaginable why would you want that???!!?!!!?!?!!!

    Nobody will.

Not the cloud, but I wouldn't mind being able to connect my brain to my computer just locally.

Being able to think at a computer and have it do things seems really nice, as someone whose brain is often faster than their ability to type well.

For things like transcribing notes for uni, or just having a notepad so I can remember things I don't have the memory capacity to hold would be great.

When I have a 3 or 4+ simultaneous thought train, it's terrifying and exhausting to me. Let's not even discuss trying to sleep.

    1000+? Executives first.

I know, I know, they'll pay some very desperate person $40.00 to test; they'll have to sign an NDA and agree not to sue first, of course.

connect your brain to the cloud

not the same sentence as “connect your brain to AI”

They really are planing to force us all as far into the cloud as possible. The cloud is a prison. The cloud is a lie 🎂

It appears to say a thousand times more.

Which - holy shit - how did we not clock that massive self-report? They have so few thoughts that this strikes them as a desirable and possible increase.

Why on earth would I want to connect my brain to the cloud when I won't even let my phone and computers connect to it.

  • source
  • [–] 4 points 3 days ago

Never even mind the quantity issue. The idea of plugging thoughts from "the cloud" into my head is horrifying. You really want to be free-basing the shit on the internet that already makes you feel dumber just by reading / watching it?

Are you sure you want to keep them from selfdestructing?

    Remember the show Pantheon?
Have someone make a fake 'scanning' machine and tell all these guys we'll give them digital immortality. "Scan" then, and then have their digital selves go on with their lives.

But those "digital" selves are actually people who are impersonating them and redirecting their wealth for the good of the world, claiming that their new perspective of immortality has completely changed their mindsets.

All I need is a RISC-V chip in my brain capable of letting me run King's Field.

  • source
  • [–] 2 points 3 days ago

Hold on. If everyone starts having 1000x more thoughts, then they'll have to start engineering solutions to that.

It's like when people started pretending they were "gluten sensitive". Yeah it's phony, but people with celiac have a lot more options now because of it.

I mean I'm not connecting my brain to any cloud, but maybe a local server and now there's open source software to organize my mind?

Ok I'm still not doing that. But you get what I'm saying.
