Discord is out there tripping itself over, quietly poking TeamSpeak “hey, maybe you could make a comeback to break our VoIP monopoly?”, meanwhile TS sits it out quietly developing at a snail’s pace.
Then we’ve got Stoat, Fluxer, and what’s not currently the trending obscure alternative (think like Guilded was too). They’re all too obscure, and most of time these apps are unsigned & lack notarisation so their code safety is a matter of “trust me” (a wise person doesn’t install random junk on their PC, regardless of it being FOSS or not - one rogue maintainer is enough to bring risk; unless they’ve gone even half as serious as Debian or other highly reputable FOSS). Adding to their obscurity, I doubt anybody is going to materialise new friends into existence by sheer willpower, will they?
Unless something happens that makes the casual Discorders jump off their platform, these hiccups are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, they’re serious. No, they still won’t make people ditch Discord - at worst they’ll keep obscure platform XYZ for contacting friend group 1, and still use Discord for their daily communities and acquaintances who don’t keep up with any tech news (like privacy leaks) at all.
That’s just some food for thought, I’m not actually going to debate about what I wrote (no time for such things!) Nevertheless, I sincerely hope Discord flops over, and a bunch of better alternatives appears.
