I've worked in places before where you had to deal with human bodies being transported and the number of people who couldn't even handle knowing there was a dead body IN A BOX nearby was shocking. Like the thing is hermetically fucking sealed dude. Relax.

  • I mean the NKVD was executing people during WW2 pretty frequently idk about it being public persay. But they were also being invaded by the Nazi's at the time and were basically just killing anyone they suspected of being a Nazi Sympathizer or Nazi. I think they also did a few public hangings immediately after the war for people the Soviet Military Tribunals found guilty of war crimes. So Nazi War Criminals in that case.

So, idk if you can compare that to the global hegemonic superpower the United States deciding "Wouldn't it be cool if we live streamed shooting this guy?". Now am I saying every single person the NKVD killed deserved it? Certainly not. It's impossible to be entirely precise when doing massive operations like they did, but it's also certainly more justified when you are the victim of a war of extermination from the Nazi War Machine rather than yknow... just doing it for fun I guess?

Personally if I knew someone and got invited to their wedding and I went and found they had decided all the gay people needed to be seperated from the rest of the group I'd just leave. Clearly that's not the type of person whose wedding I want to attend.

Stop being willfully obtuse. It's obviously about the major recent news event.

"Oh well what if they just coincidentally made a post about a russian biolab worker making a mistake at the same time as this massive international story being in the news?"

Actually it is a communism vs capitalism thing. The problem arises in both, but the solutions available depend on the system. I reccomend you look up how China is handling its massive elderly population. For example the elderly there have huge public parks and get outside moving and socializing a lot. In big cities it's common for them to have mid day slow dance meetings in the parks. This is only possible because the government's priority is not producing profit for billionaires but caring for its people. So it maintains these things and the public transport required to get the elderly there, and the assistance to keep them fed and healthy.

This video is 15 years old: https://youtu.be/SvmV7GRRPq0

When people stay active and a part of their community into their old age instead of sitting in their huge houses alone or in a nursing home they require much less support to keep living.

Also I would heavily advocate for Debian Testing if you need a rolling release distro. It is less vetted than stable but is still more vetted than many other rolling release options and you can just stay on testing as versions change while getting features pretty fast compared to stable.

So I saw a post about Obscura VPN and went to do a deep dive and some reasearch on it. Then I came back to comment and the post was gone!

So, anyway, I wanted to share what I found since it actually is quite interesting and there are a few red flags.

Obscura is owned by Sovereign Engineering Inc. registered in the United States. Willingly chose to register the company in the US for some reason. This is a major issue due to the US being one of the few places in Five Eyes, and being able to issue log mandates and gag orders without allowing a company to get a lawyer and fight it.

The founder, Carl Dong, talks in multiple interviews about how his inspiration was the Chinese Great Firewall: https://www.truefans.fm/bit-buy-bit/6a980688566a94f95bc291b1?tab=transcript https://noderunners.network/en/media/podcasts/hell-money/bitcoin-core-dev-walks-away-to-battle-the-great-firewall-of-china-with-carl-dong/187302

They also take VC Investor money:

Yes, we do have VC investors.

This may be a concern when choosing between “Traditional VPN” providers (Single-Party Relays) since you need to trust them wholly.

However, I believe this is much less of a concern with Multi-Party Relays like Obscura since a MPR provider will never have both your personal info and your traffic.

Additionally, it is much easier to switch between VPN providers than it is to switch between “cloud drive” providers (for example) since VPN providers don’t store anything you’d need to transfer.

And when asked who the investors were:

We specifically chose investors who’d be strongly supportive of our stance on Privacy and Digital Freedom, so I’m not sure they’d appreciate us listing their names on a public forum

    He refuses to answer.

I hope this info on them helps anyone who might have been considering them make their decision in a more informed manner.

So obviously it's good to read Communist works. Lenin, Engels, Marx, Stalin, Mao, etc. But I'm curious how many people have ventured out into other things? I think personally that it can be useful when you are doing a materialist analysis of the real world to have different frameworks to pull from as well. Even if they aren't communist, and at times the methods within are used as tools of oppression by the capitalist class. Some still have useful knowledge and insights, or at the very least aid you in analyzing the way an enemy might think.

Have you/would you see value in reading these sorts of texts?

Some examples: The Art of War, The Arthashastra, The Analects, Meditations, The Prince, Discourses on Livy, The Book of the Five Rings, Common Sense, Candide, etc
